whats best from your experiences as there are so many! i currently use sygate an old version 5.5 i think? its been bought out by symantec right? it used to have a wierd issue with ftp'in files across... i'd have to disconnect my firewall to get across... hoping this is solved though as now using a router/switch/modem to manage network and isp anyways as it looks like i will be doing a reformat soon on either new hardware upgrade to my system or a replacement socketA i am thinking of investing in a new firewall if one can be proved better and more compatable than my current sygate 5.5? cheers for all suggestions and insights they are greatly apprieciated
which version of sygate and have you encountered any problems with ftp or any connections? I'm hoping my router has saved me from this grief... oh and with zonealarm the older version (not sure which) is apparently more stable etc? I've heard with zonealarm you get an annoying pause when you enter servers on games?
ZoneAlarm is pretty crappy imo, but Sygate got discontinued so you're stuck using out of date versions. You may be content with this, but the best there is was released some time last year IIRC. I'm not really sure about other options, I imagine most people here just run with a routers firewall and NAT combined, which offers a fair ammount of security.
Remember reading a review and Kerio firewall came out on top as te best free one. Tried it and it seems to work quite well for me.
Not that your words make sense, but there is no such thing as a nice linksys router. Other maybe, then one placed upon a fire.
Care to share why you say that Linksys routers are very popular... and with good reason IMHO! I've used three different Linksys routers over the years, and never had a problem with any of 'em. My sons are still using 'em to this day! And I'm sitting here right now using a rather 'nice' Linksys WAG54GX2 Wireless-G ADSL 2/2+ Gateway [with SRX 200] for my internet connection Anyways... getting back to the subject of software firewalls: I'd suggest just Googling for 'firewalls', then downloading and trying half a dozen or more, to see which of 'em you like best - based on your needs. Most offer a free 30 day trial... so you could get a good 6 months of protection for free A couple of other free firewalls you might wanna consider, are Ghostwall Firewall and SoftPerfect Personal Firewall
