I used the Corsair HX 850. A good PSU though it did blow up after 3 months of use XD. Guess I was unlucky. Though credit to Scan and Corsair on quick replacement.

What case does he have? If it's an antec 1200/ P183 / P193, these are excellent.

If not, the XFX BE 850W is a good bet.

If that was too glitzy, the Corsair HX850 is a safe bet.

Or if it has to be TRUELY modular, the Seasonic X-850 is pretty awesome (read expensive).

alternative to Seasonic X-850 is Corsair Ax850. pretty similar unit internally, just a different brand.

    thanks guys for the suggestions.

Weve been looking at a corsair already and they seem ok. although i quite like the look of the XFX one Instagib has recommended.

the seasonic looks nice, but to expensive for him id say.

Seasonic or Corsair AX are the best. The Corsair HX is a close second. The XFX is in third place, but still good.

I have a Coolermaster Silent Pro Gold. Probably the cheapest 80Plus Gold PSU available, runs silently and throws out cold air, even at load.

sorry bagpuss i didnt see your first post.

hes currently running an overclocked QX6850, 4870x2, 4 gb 1066mhz ram, i think 5 hdds, 5 fans, soundcard, dvd rom, and couple of cathodes.

its more for future proof, i believe hes wanting to add stuff to it aswell, his power supply dieing has come at the wrong time.

what are the cooler master psu's like these days? ive got one but its from a few years ago now, mines ok. still powering on.

even future proofing you dont need 850W

with that rig 550W would be fine.

for single GPU setups you dont need anything more than 650W even for the most beefiest of PSUs

if he intends to Xfire then 850W would be more appopriate

He's running a 4870x2, so it's effectively crossfire already. 650-750 would probably still be fine.

well yeah but its internal Xfire and therefore still only a single card.

    aboslute max power is 75W (PCI-e) + 75W(6pin) + 150W(8pin) = 300W and its certinaly less than that around 225W i believe

single 650W will be perfectly fine while an 850W will allow for Xfire although personally id never have 2 x 4870X2
