Can anyone recommend a good wifi router/modem (802.11n)? I'd prefer to have actual stories of usage, rather than people hearing which ones are good/bad. I'm not interested in knowing what manufacturers people don't like either (I've used D-Link with no problems in the past, yet always hear how people won't touch them with a s***ty stick).

I recently bought the Belkin N1 router/modem, but have been really disappointed with its range. The D-Link 802.11g router/modem I have has much better range. As it was bought as an upgrade, I'm not impressed and will be returning it.

I live in a 4 bedroom bungalow with a converted attic and a big garden. Would reaaaally like to get good coverage. There is a PC downstairs (running XP, funnily enough the only one that has issues. Mac OS 9 = fine. Windows 2k = fine. Mac OS X = fine. Various Linux distros = fine) that refuses to stay connected even though it's really close to the router (not too much wall in between either). I tried the Belkin N1 card, but that didn't work at all, so now it's using a Netgear 802.11n USB adapter and seems to be working OK, but never gets above 49% signal strength.

I'm using a Linksys WAG325N Wireless-N ADSL2+ Gateway Hex. It's "the biz" as they say

FWIW... I got mine from Broadband Buyer.

I buy all my broadband/networking gear from them actually, primarily because they offer very competitive prices, and a very speedy service.
I've seen me put an order in at (i.e.) 3pm, and received an email less than ½hr later, to say my order has been processed/shipped :eeek:

That's strange about the N1 as I bought one recently and it's offering 100% coverage, whereas my old 3com 11g allinone was struggling. Have you got the latest firmware running on it?

You may be having problems because it's so close to the router. Mine couldn't maintain a link until I had a good distance between the two preventing saturation.

Yep I have, and googling shows I'm not the only one getting poor performance from it. Most reviews seem to say the coverage isn't as good as the Belkin pre-N routers.
Nope, not that either. I know this because other machines are much closer and also the router is on a different floor to this PC. Still a good line of sight though. Also my laptop gets perfect signal when sat in the same location.

Actually considering going back to Windows 2k for this PC as XP just hates my house so much.

I'm probably going to go for this one, looking at the reviews it's much the same as all the N rated routers in that the speed claims are vastly over-optimistic, but it's the range increase I'm really looking for. The reviews of this one seem to think it's pretty good.

    Thanks :)
