the prescott 2.8 should perform around the same as a 3.2C, however, I wouldn't like to hasten a guess as to how much it's going to cost
£151.58 (at the time of writing ) EDIT: and, Really? Should perform as well as a 3.2c and have good overclocking potential as the prescotts were not originally going to be released at the slower speeds....
a bit of interest regarding the prescott.... http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=13663 There has been a lot of talk of poor performance from the Prescotts over the past 3-4 months...
Should be, though I wouldn't hold your breath. I think a lot of people will be dissapointed. As for the price, I'm a little dubious about the 2.8 prescott being £26 cheaper than the 2.8c northwood. Particularly as they are both .13micron, yet the prescott has double the L2 cache. That's quite a bit more silicon, regardless of other improvements, so for it to be cheaper seems quite impossible to me. Perhaps that is not the full price, and you have to pay the difference later. Who knows. Either that, or they(intel)'re throwing this batch of socket 478 prescotts out for cheap to try and control the athlon 64. Not a bad idea, as it's only for a couple of months, before lga775 comes out. 8-ball
I don't know for sure. I may be wrong, but I wouldn't go preordering anything yet. I suggest waiting. 8-ball
Good stuff. Ok, no one knows how the prescotts will overclock. I would suggest, something like a 2.8 M0. you should be able to run get it up to a pretty high FSB running 1:1 for pretty hot performance. It'll easily last until this whole hardware thing settles down. 8-ball
Definitely the M0 or SLZ65 (they are the same, no?) over the standard one? they are an extra £25 over the standard one at Overclockers. It will actually end up being around £40 more the the cost of the postage increase by splitting off the rest of my order and the higher price of XP Pro OEM at Overclockers over Scan where I was intending buy the stuff from... And I was originally thinking of getting a 2.6c as discussed here
You don't really want to cpu's from scan as they only stock the oem chips. I made that mistake, and although I haven't actually tried overclocking my chip yet, It is quite common knowledge that the oem chips don't overclock as well as the retail ones. hope that helps 8-ball
You sure. I was always under the impression that an OEM chip was a retail chip minus the packaging and heat sink.
Think they have changed a bit on that now, they sell both retail and OEM, at least for the P4s anyway, see here near the bottom of the page... So you think the M0 / SLZ65 is def worth the extra cash?
The retail chips are made in malaysia and the oem ones in costa rica. At least that was the case when I bought my 2.4c. There are still some good overclocking oem chips about, but nothing like as many as there are high overclocking retail chips. 8-ball
