A friend of mine has a dell dimension 5150 and is looking to upgrade from the x600 built in to a more powerful card for £125 tops

I would recommend him one but i have no idea about what Pci-e speed the slot is.

    cheers

its PCI-e 16x, i could be wrong but im about 90% sure!

i'd suggest a 7900GS, you could possibly stretch to a GT for around 150.

I just had it confirmed yep its a X16

Whats the reason behind the X800 and X850 graphics cards retaining so much value?

I really haven't a clue. Techincally they're outdone by a 6800 ultra, so i would definately look for something better for the price. You'd probably have to ask someone who knows specifics about GFX cards as to why theyre ~£150

I have one they are good but not that good, strange. I was swaying towards just a 6600gt for him, cause he's reluctant to go over 100, and he mainly plays RTS so, it will require minimal graphics power in respect to FPS

I have no idea why x850s reatain such value in the UK, they have dropped down to about $150 in the states, or around £76. They actually do beat a 6800 Ultra more then they lose(depends on the game though). I'd say a 7900GS or an x1950pro are good bets, depeding on what you can get a better price on. Actually, x1900GTs have gone down in price since the release of the x1950pro, so he may be able to get a good deal on one of them!

Cheers, for his purposes he won't need anything more than 256mb mem, unless he plays ut2k7
