    Hi all,

I need to stick a wireless card into my desktop because I can't get an ethernet cable into where I will be working for the next few months.

I know little about the subject - does anyone have any recommendations? Is it best to get a PCI card, or are external USB adapters just as good? If it helps, I have an ASUS P5Q deluxe.

    Cheers,

    Jimmy

Would a 200mbps powerline, like this one be better than a 300 mbps PCI wifi card?

Will they also work with any router, i've have mine for about 5 or 6 years now, so pretty old.

The PCi cards seem a lot cheaper, but i'd rather spend an extra £20 and get a better connection. My router isn't too far away from where the PC will be, but there's a floor in the way.

Yeah, I think the homeplugs are better in that they drop less packets and obviously you aren't depending on thin air to provide your connection. And obviously there'd be no discernible real world difference in speeds either.

Hadn't realised homeplugs were so cheap, I'd definitely give them a go.

Oh, also you don't have to have a wireless network then, so less chance of people stealing your interwebz :thumb:

Sorry people - I should have been clearer in my original post. Where I work I have no phone socket or means to connect one, therefore I can't get "regular" broadband. There is a good wireless signal from a 3rd party company that costs approx £10pm for unlimited use, so I have to go wifi for the foreseeable future.

I like the idea of a pci card, but really only want the internet for web-browsing and downloading the occasional game/movie, so I wouldn't consider myself a power user.

i was running one of THESE in my HTPC for a while before i replaced the PC. it was fast enough to stream multimedia over LAN and internet and was overall pretty snappy. the external antenna is a very nice feature which also gives you the option to upgrade later on if need be.

    plus, its only $12!
