Hi all, im currently have a linux box running ubuntu 9.04 and was wondering what people thought the essential apps were, i know ubuntu already comes with pretty much everything you would need, but after using winamp / foobar the music players seem a little drab, also a good torrent program would be good, i was going to go with azurus or whatever its called now (i use utorrent on windows but they didn't seem to have a linux version.)
Im using VLC for vids, and opera as my web browser, any other cool apps people recomemend?

    Thanks for any replies.

    Ktorrent ;)
    Amarok.

I have very similar tastes to yourself.

I use utorrent and foobar also. Ktorrent is very similar and Amarok is just amazing.
However I used these programs with KDE, now Im on Gnome and i dont know if kde stuff works on gnome (i am a very new linux user)

    Hope this helps :)

EDIT: I've just done a bit of searcing, and installed Exaile, seems ok so far. Check it out :thumb:

I use Deluge torrent client, good, light and copies all the things i like about utorrent on xp stick away from the default torrent client as it eats the fat one.

Also Vlc is the way forwards for video playback; an amazing ap does dvd out of the box and has truly stunning power once you delve under the 'hood', media streaming server, media stream collection/transcoding to name just a few functions.

ClamAv.....Ok i know all the linux-heads are face palming:duh: and calling me noob:sigh: and i realize there are nearly no native virus out there for linux but if your using linux to download and host files connected to a windows network. The viruses are just going to sit quietly on your Ubuntu box waiting for your mom to download them to her xp box and then your owned:waah:. So get Clamav if you share/host files!

mplayer is an excellent video player and can cope with pretty much any thing. Torrents i tend to use rTorrent and just ssh into my server to run them, screen is your friend learn to love it and the cli becomes even more powerful.

First things first: "GNU/Linux." Please :p

Gnome comes with Transmission as a torrent client. I rarely use torrents but I've found it very good.

As someone said, VLC is the way to go for video. It wouldn't, however, style itself after my GTK settings so I started using Totem. VLC seems to open faster, that's about all the difference I've noticed. Apart from those two, you can't go wrong with mplayer.

As for music: XMMS2 and Beep Media Player are both Winamp clones for GNU. XMMS2 should be in your favourite repositories, BMP can maybe be found in the older repos (as it's no longer bein developped), else it's time to have a google. I know there's a .deb package on one of the Debian servers somewhere.

Oh, and try gl-117 (should be in the repositories). Shooting down planes takes the edge of after realising you miss half the dependencies for a source package :D

Have a look at linuxappfinder.com and directory.fsf.org. Browse around and you're sure to find a lot more applications that'll interest you or that you want to try.

In 99.9% of cases, a KDE program will work in a Gnome environment and vise-versa.

There are so many useful small utilities and programs out there for linux, I'm a fan of Kolourpaint and Kalzium personally. Soundconverter works for turning my .flacs into .mp3s for the ipod too.

    assuming a gnome desktop:

deluge for torrents (utorrent works perfectly well with wine, but imho deluge is better)
    gnome-do keyboard launcher
mplayer (from svn) for hardware accelerated x264 playback
banshee or quod libet for music
