Given that FBI agents have real difficulties getting internet access in the first place, I don't see this squad blazing trails of wholesomeness through the mires of depravitude...
porn's been around how long? heck, the kama sutra supposedly originates in 8th century B.C. there are supposedly erotic cave paintings (though i haven't seen them myself...). that's a lot of smut over a looong period of time. i don't see it going away anytime soon. waste of tax payers money. i really don't see how "adult pornography is a threat to families and children". personally, i think alcohol is a far greater threat to families and children than Debbie Does Dallas. how many domestic battery cases are based on the fact that hubby spanked the monkey too much and became abusive?
Many rapists kind of "prime" themselves with porn. Like with alcohol or anything else for that matter, it is more about enjoying it responsibly than about whether it will inherently lead to abuse. The initial point you make is very valid, though. Porn is here to stay. Sex is a basic drive, and therefore interest, of human beings. Like you cannot abolish mood/mind altering substances, material luxuries or even food, you cannot abolish sex. People will want it and have it. The trick is to do so responsibly.
didn't think about rapists; i was trying to be flippant and make a point. thank you for pointing that out nexxo. i agree with you about it being a matter of responsibility. personal responsibility, not governmental responsibility. i feel i shouldn't have to enjoy myself by someone else's moral standards. if they don't want their children to be affected by pornography, then they should make sure that the kids are not put into a situation where they will come into contact with it. just as if they wanted to keep them from drinking they should keep them away from booze. but the gov't shouldn't stop people from making or enjoying adult material. now if you'll excuse me, i'm going to go browse suicide girls while i still can...
Is it just me but this is a waste of time and that porn is never going to fully disappear, just like Nexxo said sex is a basic human instinct, it's ironic that the FBI are doing the job because I'm really sure they have other things better to do.
This is all about the sdministration throwing a bone to the religious right. No one, inclusind the agents assigned to the squad, are taking thei seriously, but this way the republicans can say "Look how we're fighting porn Vote for us and give us more money!". Welcome to American Politics. I guess the only good news is that this debacle is both fairly cheap and harmless.
