    ok I'll try it out.

I decided to drop the flash stick idea...due to the low transfer speeds and the read/write concerns and went for a mini external drive.

maybe I should start a new thread instead.

You could easily get it to run on a properly fast flash drive - something like a Corsair Voyager GT is actually faster than most small drives.

anyway this is what I've got. After disabling the IR port and the parallel port in the bios it still hangs either during the boot up, at different points each time. After reading a few other forum posts it looks like I should have installed the grub loader to the MBR of my external drive instead of my internal....which is what I've done...but windows boots perfectly well from it...so I don't see what's the fuss about.

on one boot up attempt it brought up:

scsi 0:0:0:0 rejecting I/O to dead device

    Any ideas?

I gave the feedora7 Live CD, this worked a little better I got in to the OS but then it hung after a while...it didn't seem to like my external mouse/keyboard (USB)

I'm going to try and put the following command in the boot loader, as I've seen this on a few other pages.

    mkinitrd --preload ehci-hcd --preload usb-storage --preload scsi_mod --preload sd_mod --force-lvm-probe

ok that didn't work...no when I boot up it loads all the services then looks like its loading the drive (I see my GFX card name but it disappears to quickly) then the screen goes blank......sigh....anyone?
