Ok, so im working on an extrnal CD opening button, and I found which points to solder the wires to, and I have the button I am going to connect, but when I tested out connecting the 2 points to *hopefully* make the drive open....it kinda caught fire. First it smelled like burning silicone, then it started to smoke (white smoke) then there was red smoke (yes, red!). After i put the mini fire out , i looked at the board to see a lovely HOLE burned straight through it and a bunch of black goo around it. I think i connected the wrong points. Oops?
red smoke is essentially a sign of something ferrous burning. Iron burning is not good, because when it gets molten, it burns though everything...
on a side note, alway put the bottom of the drive screwed back on when powering up. i got a nice crackle from one of the chips when powering up my DVD rom when testing a mod (with the bottom plate taken off). some of the chips use the plate as a heatsink. luckily my dvd rom still works flawlessly!
i did almost the same thing you did. but i shorted it out on the case.made some ****ing massive sparks.scared the life out of me, but it still works to this day.
