I wonder if the 256mb of memory will hold back the 8600s from achieving their full potential power wise. I'm surprised they won't have a 512mb versions of the 8600 chips, and really shocked that they would make a 128mb version of the 8500!

I imagine these would scale nicely in sli, I agree though I am disappointed by the lack of memory on them. Is it possible for distributors such as evga or bfg to add more memory or is that not possible?

Why wouldn't they allow them to be sli'd? That makes no sense.

If you read it carefully, he said that OEMs wouldn't be allowed to alter the amount of memory on them and thatyou're generally better off going for a single more powerful card than SLi. :)

So when's that review coming up, Tim? Or are you too busy ordering around the peons now that you're emperor in chief?

It'd kill sales of the card if it were to be priced so close to the 8800, I'd wait till actual real high street prices are available and reserve judgement till then.

From the benches I've seen these things are a complete joke. Top of the line 8600 performing only on par with a 7900GS? Get real nvidia. I know they're going to be stuck at the sub-£200 mark, but you'd think they could pull a bit more out of the hat then that.

Aren't these cards just replacements (effectively) for the 7 series cards but with DX10 support? If that's the case then you can sort of understand why they don't want the cards to perform.

Yeah, it kinda sucks that the 8600GT is only barely faster than the 7600GS, but it IS DX10.

Apparently they overclock really well. Over 1k core with v mods and air cooling.

But most things overclock well with voltmods and suicide voltages dude. What things will do voltmodded is imo about as useless a measurement as what the PR people envisage 6 months before release.

I'm hoping they still make that 8600 Ultra, that should score a bit higher. I'm also wondering how ATIs cards in this range will be(x2600 series is my guess to what it will be called), maybe they can correct the problems that the x1600 caused for their mid-range sales, because it got trounced by the 7600 series cards.
