Hi. I have a, hopefully, simple question. How do I set up my own server so I can access my files remotely, without having a DNS host name? I don't want a webpage, I just want to access a shared folder by typing in my IP address in the URL box of a browser. Is this possible? I would use this for files for school, and stuff like that. This eliminates email, which can't hold big files, and is cumbersome to use, and it eliminates storage websites, which are cumbersome too. scem0
You can run a FTP server, or use normal MS windows networking. But MAKE SURE you install and configure a software firewall. If you're behind a router you'll need to map ports too. Or DMZ with a software firewall.
This whole FTP thing works great within a LAN, but I have no idea how to connect to a FTP server that is not on my LAN. I can't just type ftp://<the IP address> from my school to access my hard drive at home. There are tons of people with my IP address across the internet. How do I make my 'FTP request' more specific? Sorry for the newb questions . scem0
You need to find your computers external ip, not the internal LAN ip. Best way to find out is goto somewhere like www.whatismyip.com
