What's the best way, to control things on my desktop with my laptop over my LAN, might be a strange request, but it has some uses.

Google vnc, or if you use something like logmein. You can access it from anywhere

Or RDP if no one's logged in at the time... (built into windows as well if you don't want to install anything)

Or if you can see the screen from where you are and have Wi-Fi, you can look at something like Mobile Mouse for smart phones (gives you keyboard and mouse on the phone)

depends on what your situation is, give a better explanation of what you are trying to achieve

    RDP
    VNC
    KVM

loads of acronyms we could throw at you :)

oh and not a strange request at all, would consider it almost vital for any home network to access any pc form another

    http://www.uvnc.com/

I've found this brilliant. I use it to access my server, which is run headless. Stable, fast, light, and free.

    1. Logmein if you regularly need access over the internet, will also work on a LAN, and allows you to share the screen (and its free).

    2. RDP if you're on your own LAN - although it'll lock the screen locally while you're on.

    3. VNC if you only use it on your own LAN and need to share the screen.

Zoon has mentioned the three that I use.

Why would it be a strange request? I use remote desktop apps every day without fail. Most of my servers are remote desktop managed.

If you can see the desktop from the laptop it might be worth looking into synergy.
It lets you control the pc with your keyboard/mouse of your laptop, just like moving to a second display.

I haven't used it for a long while, but it was never hard to get going.

Remote Desktop is far more than sufficient for the majority of uses and it's actually fairly simple to set up. Gets my vote.

TightVNC, realVNC, ultraVNC any will do the job.

Not a strange request, a good percentage of the forum readership will be using one of the above.
