For some reason, the remote control to my TV doesn't work well from large angles, so when watching TV from my bar, I have to aim for half a minute before even being able to change the volume. Would it be possible to build an amplifier for the remote control, which can be placed somewhere in the room to pick up the IR light, and flash a second IR led, which is aimed toward the TV. This would hopefully work for all my remotes (DVD and such). Could it be battery operated, or would the IR receiver drain the batteries quickly?
Could I use a phototransistor from a ball mouse for this purpose?
If anyone could design a circuit, that would be great :)

I would see if I could find which wavelength the remote uses, and find phototransistor or an IR reciever that is suitiable.

At radio shack I have seen combo kits with an IRED and a reciever, I would think that you could just wire them in series and use a 9v battery and resistor to power the circuit. I may be wrong, you may need a logic gate to clean up the signal before re-sending it. But it would be possible to to.
