im so stupid. i thought the stuff hadnt shipped, and i ordered the stuff 5 days ago, so i emailed mouser. in less than 10 MINUTES (!) i got a response saying it had shipped THE DAY I ORDERED IT and was in the hub in Medowlands, NJ (i live in Princeton, NJ). i already got the rest of the parts from the Rat Shack. my final question is: on the heatseekerz tut, they have the remote built right into the RS232 casing. that would be too cramped and small and also would probably be out of range of the remote. so, i got a project box from radioshack, that will sit ontop of my desk, and will be the reciever. the problem is, i need to get the wires from the serial connector to the box. would it work if i took a length of Cat5 cable and used that? or are the wires too small? i would like an answer soon, so i can go ahead and do it.

EDIT: does it matter which way i put in the resistors? and i have two different types of capacitors: radial lead and axial lead. the axial lead is rat shack part number 272-1013. which way would i put that in?

dood, dont waste time makin one yourself, I just got a new 5.1 surround sound card made by Abit (Abit AU10) (dolby certified, dts, etc). I bought it from kustom pc's (www.kustom.co.uk ?) for £40 roughly. One of the main reasons i bought this card was a) becoz i needed a 5.1 suround card for my setup and b) becoz it came with an IR remote and reciever, it also came bundled with WinDVD2000 and WinRip (which sux0rs). Anyway aslong as you have a spare PS/2 keyboard , or even have a primary PS/2 keyb (rofl, /me chuckles, dood your *wayy* out of fashion :D ) I used a spare PS/2 keyb to plug into the IR reciever (that requires a PS/2 port and a keyboard to interface with the computer). AAAAnyway it works liek a dream, and each button on the remote does a charactewr, for example 'up' on the remote does 'PG_UP' on the pooter, and other letters like m for mute etc... so I can actually type in IRC using my IR remote, r0x0r. :D It also works beuttifully with winamp if you get the right plugin, and works a real treat with windvd2000 for which it was designed. The sound card is quality aswell, and i think i got a good buy for £40..

i just got done soldering the CAT5 wires to the RS232 connector. i got 60% tin 40% lead solder with a rosin flux core, and it works wonders. now i just have to solder all the componenets inside the project box. when im finished, ill test it first, and if it works, ill take pics and post them here. if it doesnt work, ill take pics anyway, put them in the Disaster Mod hideout, and do it all over again!

Maplin also do the regulator 78L05 (QL26D, LE79L is a low-drop-out alternative) and the diode 1N4148 (QL80B). Their female 9-pin D-connector is RK61R, hood sold separate as JB68Y.

Not found another source for the sensor - it's got a built-in amplifier and de-modulator so a bit special.

I know the thread is about ir receivers, but would any of you have stumbled across a ir tranceiver circuit that is/must be IRda compatible? I really want to build one for my digicam as I'm not willing to fork out whatever it costs to buy one.

And well done hyperactive98 for getting the receiver working :) Will be making mine sometime soon.

u realize the IR reciever u just built is SOFTWARE decoded and so is eating up cpu speed here is a much better although far more complicated design that decodes the signal in hardware

Check out this page and other links on the Girder site.

Only snag (for me) is it uses a PIC, but the author will sell pcb, etc in the USA.

Yeah pcemma, that's is a problem for me too seeing that I don't have a PIC programmer or access to one. And to buy the PCB and PIC from the website author and importing it to SA will probally cost just as much as buying a new, fresh out of the box, IR dongle (SA -> USA Exchange = BAD :sigh:)

I am, however, willing to waste my CPU cycles as I will only be using the tranciever to download my pics off my Digicam after which I will not be needing it. The cicuits that do use PICs seem like they would be perfect for my needs but the PIC problem is an issue. If you know of or have found a software decoding version, please let me know.
