Okay all, Remote Desktop (RD) problem:

Broadband speed test on Normal Desktop = 8MB Down / 1MB Up
Broadband speed test on Remote Desktop = 800KB Down / 200KB Up

The remote desktop is pretty much un-useable, is this right? Is there something majorly wrong here? Is there anyway to speed it up?

    Thanks!

There are a few things you can do.
    Drop the resolution.
    Drop the video bit rate.
    Or both.

You could also try looking into VNC which I have found to perform better, specially when running at a resolution of 5760x1080 usually at 256 colours which is most suffcient on a connection with 20mbit down 2mbit up.

    200k up?

If you're trying to remote into a machine with only a 200k up speed then you really are going to be limited with what screen res and colour depth you'll be able to get away with (800x800x256?).

I'd also guess with a connection that slow there may be a fair bit of latency. Try pining a known good server from that location see what the response is.

EG if I : "Ping www.google.com" I get responses of 17ms, my guess is your pings will be greater.

Latency makes a big difference to remote desktop "feel" and if you've got crappy bandwidth and crappy pings you're going to have crappy remote desktop (or vnc) experience.

Give VNC a shot, but I've always found it never as snappy as RDC in normal use, although there have been times when it's the only thing which will work.

For remote desktop issues, just forward to port 3389 to your router.

Are you using RDP over a lan or internet? If it's a lan, then obviously both pc's should get same down and upload speeds.

I don't know if it's off topic but have you tried logmein? It's pretty good, but if you triyng SSH or other kind of Remote Access there are other way to speed it up.
