Does anyone know of any utility which allows you to remotely log a computer on over the network?

Need to find a way to do this so that we can complete updates to the libraries from the office.

At the moment the procedure is

    Unfreeze Computer
    Add To Update Login Group
Phone Library to log computers on
    Reboot
    Freeze Computer

We need a way to cut the librarians out the loop, and cannot have autologon because of security risks.

    Thanks Guys.

I presume you're running a windows OS, but you could use Netmeeting ("conf" in the "run" dialogue) to do it, it has a desktop-control program which can be set to start on boot etc, so that should work for you... just an idea :)

VNC/tightVNC/Pcanywhere, any of these will allow you to access a machine remotely :)

I'd have to agree with that, I use it at work ALL the time and it's amazing what you can do. Unfortunately it has a pricetag to match though! So for an alternative I would look at some VNC program. There are loads to choose from these days.

I use WinVNC. Works great, small programs. Run SERVER on one machine then the viewer app on the other. Scope them out.

VNC is also cross-platform and best of all FREE. It also has a HTTP/WEB based option, so you can monitor PC's in your webbrowser. For simple remote control VNC is indeed a good choice.

    Sorry, forgot to add!!

Audits have forbidden the use of VNC :/

although the problem is been solved now, it turns out that the video drivers were causing the machines to reboot when they we're been accessed by LanDesk (a hyped up VNC) once the new video drivers are put out in the policy we should be able to remote into the pc and log in manually.

Ive just rolled out TightVNC to the majority of the computers at work with no tray Icon so I can do remote support or monitor suspicious internet activity (It's a school) until I update the proxy over easter as their running wingate now which does me head in!
Im also looking for a good console tool to complement it and found VNC commander for free but it seems it quite old and uses its own inbuilt VNC so it's a bit buggy.
All in all TightVNC works well on its own I have no complaints so far using it on XP/2K machines.

Apparently TightVNC will reveal the server password using one of those simple asterisk revealer apps. Afaik the password field isn't accessible if the tray icon isnt clickable though, but just in case ;)
