I'm thinking it would be nice to have my PC in the room next door, and just keep the monitor, keyboard and mouse in my bedroom. Keyboad and mouse extension is easy, but SVGA is not...

I ruled out software, it's too slow for video and 3D graphics (games etc).

You can get really long (10-20m) VGA cables. I think I need about 10m minimum, probably a bit more (no more than 15 though). I'm dubious as to the quality of these cables... the only ones available locally claim to be tripple sheilded but are still only a tenner.

I was wondering how much one of those VGA amplifiers would help? Belkin make them. I was told that I don't need one if I'm running less than 30m (!) of cable.

How about a long DVI digital cable, with a VGA converter at one end? My graphics card (MSI GeForce Ti4200) has DVI out. Being digital in theory the signal should not degrade...

I normally run at 1280x1024 on at 19" CTX Pro monitor at 85Hz, so picture quality needs to be excellent. I currently have a 1m 15pin -> BNC lead.

Why such a long cable to go nextdoor? Can't you just drill a hole through the wall, then use a shorter cable to reach the PC?

Any booster/driver you can get at a reasonable price is bound to reduce image quality. A good quality cable would be better.

Not sure if you can connect an analogue monitor to a DVI graphics card....

    Cheers

Mainly because I'd prefer not to have holes in my wall :D

Seriously, I don't want to mod my house, only my computer. I did think about it, but...

I notice that anyone with £3500 to spare can get DVI over ethernet. £10000 gets you wireless DVI. Anyone got a spare winning lottery ticket? :)

I'm doing almost the exact same thing...

Only I'm adding power/reset/all the LEDs and a couple other things, and putting it on a couple of 25 pin cords. Just so I stuff my PC in my closet and clear up clutter on my desk.

Just make sure it's got ferrites and is thick.

Interesting idea, extending everything... I'd like to do some drive independent activity LEDs perhaps. The main issue is the VGA though, because it's so hard to get a good signal over distance, especially where you have to lay the cable in.

Yeh, the VGA is the main problem. I was told BNC would be perfect for such a thing, but seeing as how I already have all the stuff for a HD-15 based cord. I'll see how it goes and report back.

FYI I'll be using an 11 foot long cable without ferrites or much shielding. [ Seems I'm out of funds  ]

I know that wouldn't improve over the vga cable much or at all, because, the VGA signal is just thrown along with the DVI signal.

The 4 pins by the wide blade connector and the blade it's self, are the red, green, blue, and one of the syncs and the blade is the shields for the R,G,and B.

Isn't DVI designed for longer cables anyway though?

At least those 4 "blade" things are thicker.

It depends, there are two kinds of DVI. There is the analogue DVI, which is just as you say, and there is digital. Digital is usually only used for LCD monitors.
