I am running Windows 98. I am trying to uninstall XStop from my PC. It's an old program the company does not seem to support anymore and is entirely uselss as a porno filter but insists on running every time I boot up. I can close the program, but have to enter in a password every time. I have the correct password, but it does not seem to matter. I closed the program using the password, then looked in Add/Remove Programs. There was no entry there for XStop, so I searched the drive and found the executable file in C:\Windows\System. I deleted the file and the corresponding entry in my startup.ini file. I rebooted, only to find that a second entry in the startup file has been created and another executable named 'rescue.exe' has been created in C:\Windows\System. So I deleted that one, created a dummy file named 'rescue.exe' in the same folder, and removed the startup.ini entry. Rebooted, and - surprise! - the original executable, 'xstop.exe', has returned. I don't understand this, since I have the legitimate password to the program and administrative access to the PC. Please help? Thank you.
Use msconfig (Start->Run->msconfig) to stop it running at boot; that'll stop that section at least. If you're not fussed about a proper uninstall (taken from the Add/Remove Programs list etc) then just delete the remaining files and it should be ok... Good luck
Msconfig is how I edited the startup.ini file. If I click 'Apply' and immediately go back into Msconfig, the dang thing has already entered in another entry pointing to the second executable it creates. It's like it knows when I'm trying to delete it and is playing games with me. I think I may have to invest in a gun! Thanks.
