By keeping my iPod in my pocket with the headphones plugged in, i seemed to have cracked the jack , so I decided to do surgery (getting it repaired cost 250USD). Now, keep in mind that the repair is not finished. I didn't take the before pictures, so they start with the iPod Open! iPod open, with the battery and HDD taken out. Here is a bad picture of the cracked jack. With the cover on it was much easier to see how it was crooked. My Fix is to perpanently solder the Remote Control Unit to the iPod. I cut the cable and it exposed 6 colored wires. Using my Multimeter I determined which color went to which jack spot. Now I am off to take apart the jack! Wish me luck!
wow, someones brave. Dont think i would be upto hacking appart my iPOD (if i had one). What is actually broken in the jack? cant you just run a small bead of hot glue or something around the plug where it meets the jack?
wow brave man, good luck! personally I'm not a fan of Ipods, or Itunes .... *leaves before he gets beaten up*
No, it is actually cracked in half almost, and some small bits of plastic are missing. Now that I have ripped it apart more, I can also see that some of the soldered connections are broken away too.
finally someone who realized you can take an ipod apart.... all these freaking people who were like "oh once the battery dies you can't take it apart so you have to get a new one" morons....... don't forget the two extra wires are the data lines/power lines for the remote, so you might want to figure out where those go....
yeah! People complain, but I am always like, no you CAN replace the battery...whatever. I know about the data lines. If you look closely on the duct tape diagram you can see where I have them. There are 4 connections on the actual phono-type jack, but there are also 2 circles areound it. I also traced those.
You can if you're a PC modder. Remember that Apple's products are mainly bought by people used to using things out of the box, rather than building/modding/generally opening them up and messing with their insides like we PC users do!
You can now get the battery replaced by Apple for $99 cderalow, nzc - perhaps you don't own an ipod? I would be extremely nervous about doing anything to the internals of my $400 iPod. And before Apple introduced their plan, replacing it yourself would cost you nearly that much for the battery and you would be voiding your warranty. visualaid - my ipod was worth every penny. I abosolutely love it. Its got a huge capacity, extremely easy-to-use controls, and is a piece of art itself. Many people argue that the Archos and iRiver HD players are better, and in some aspects they are, but I think the iPod is the perfect mix of aesthetics, capacity, and size. The iPod also has some great features, I would just like to see built in FM-tuner and FM-transmitter (which some other players do have). But if you do decide to purchase the iPod, I believe you'll be very happy with your decision. (BTW, the iPod is more of a head-turner then any of the others )
actually quite the opposite as I own 3 iPods a 1GB 1st generation (with the mechanical scroll wheel) a 10GB 2nd generation (with the touch senstive scroller and original button style) and a 40GB 3rd generation (with the fancy red glowing buttons that I don't really like) and when/if they come out with a 4th generation alrge one (as I don't like the new mini-iPods, if i wanted to only have 4GB of space i would have bought an old 5GB gen 1 or gen 2 as the little ones are plain ugly and a large ripoff), I'll likely buy one of them, as my 40GB and the 10GB still don't have enough space to carry all of my music with me (I've lent the 1GB to my gf along with my old iBook)
i must admit, ipods are sweet. my friend has one, gen 3. i dont like the red glowing buttons either, what was apple thinking? why arent they apple style white anyways? i bought a creative labs nomad jukebox zen usb2 style with a 20gig hdd. it is still at the manufacterer getting repaired, where it has been for...3...months... i'm gonna kill someone, i swear. i like mine a lot, but the ipod is definaetly cooler, smaller, better. now that the 15 gig is $300 the price is more acceptable i'm actually thinking of selling my old mp3 player when i get it back [which will be in perfect condition] and buying an ipod, cause i wants it!
a friend of mine had a nomad jukebox and he had to get it repaired. he got a new one and had to get it repaired. they sent him a new one, and you know what? he had to get it repaired. he's on his 6th one now i think.
for more info about the ipod go to tech tv and type ipod in the search bar i wanted to get a i pod then i heard the batterys are a bitch so im just waiting for the right mp3 player to come along i have the nomad muvo mp3 player/thumbdrive it aint all that but it gets the job done heres some ipod parodies
I haven't had much trouble with the battery (except on a 12-hr flight to Hawaii, no place to charge ). I guess it all depends on how long you'll keep it unplugged at a time. Apple claims 8 hours of battery life, but it doesn't seem to stay charged that long. I've only had my 3rd gen iPod for 3 mos., and it lasts pretty long (don't know for sure how long), but I got a 2nd gen nearly 1.5 years ago and the life on that decreased with use. But it only decreases to a point, I'd say you can expect a minimum of 3-4 hrs. Thats one reason I like having replaceable batteries, you don't have to worry about no power if you carry some batteries. (Unless you're like me and build an adapter to charge via 2 9vs )
Hope it works, But for the sake of the Ipod argument. The Ipod is not the best anymore, I own the iRiver iHP-120, and I use to own an Ipod. The reason I came to my conclusion that the iHP is better, is i bought both of them at the same time with the intention of returning one. I returned the Ipod. The battery did not last me the day, and the amp and the sound quality is really lacking on the Ipod when compared to the iHP-120. As for asthetics, I really don't see the point of asthetics on my main unit, I KEEP IT IN MY POCKET. Besdies the remote on the iHP which is the only part of the player visible has gotten me many compliments on it's looks, and even started conversations that lead to dates.
