IMHO, I haven't found anything that I like overall better than the iPod. I've played around with the iHP-120 and I still feel like the iPod is a better device. I haven't tried every MP3 player out there, but I think the iPod is still ahead (which they are in the HD MP3 player market). I'll admit that some other players have better features, but they lack other qualities of the iPod. One of the main reasons I didn't like the iHP line is because of the controls. I find the iPod's controls much more intuitive and the overall "coolness factor" is higher. Also the iPod is damn sexy
you are the man i saw the mp3 player you are talking about too, its quite a looker, really it is. my friend has one of the slimline iriver cdmp3 players, that thing is something to look at too, its the thinnest cd player i've ever seen, so thin the controls are on the side, and he loves it. i wouldnt be surprised if the new iriver hdd mp3 player rocked that much too question about it though, do you have to use software to add files/music to the mp3 player? if i'm not mistaken the ipod is automatically recognized as a hard drive, and i give them points for that
iPod can be set to be recognized as a HDD, but you still need to use software to put the songs on. I use iTunes, which is a really great program in my opinion. I took off the jack today and am working on decifering the jack so that I know which wire to solder where. It is quite a challenge as this is no ordinary jack. I probably wont be able to have new pics until momday, but then I should have it finish....and will know if it still works........
the iHP you just dump stuff on to it, it plays everything pretty much. It uses a folder tree system in which the way your organize the folders on the player is how the navigation picks them up. I found out by mistake it plays the sound of a type of movie file when transfering the file to a friends house via the ihp-120. Since there is no prevention crap on the iRiver unlike the Ipod, you can just dump music onto it, it will play it and then you can transfer it to some other computer. It is a drag and drop system. No software needed. And to techmonkey, the navigation on the unit is somewhat more difficult than that of the Ipod, cause that scroll adds so much moeny to the price of the Ipod. BUT the remote of the iHP-120 (which is what I primarily use due to practicality, even the ipod is to big to take out and change songs.) The remote is the easiest thing in the world to use, easier than an elevator. Oh and did I meantion the optical abilities? The built in recording feature with optical in, built in mic, and external mic, oh yea an FM radio with perfect reception, ability to read the lyrics of the song off of it, the ability to read word files off of it for last minute studying or just plan cheating on exams because no one suspects this little thing can store entire essays. I think that beats a scroll weel that costs the users 100 bux more than the joystick and remote on my iHP put together. The ipod was the best. Sorry if I completly trashed this thread, good luck with that it would be a very expensive mess up, but I just had to get the truth out.
I bought one of those sony mini-disc players, DON'T!!! They recorded once, then broke (yes, plural) i returned it three times!!!! it recorded fine but it went psycho afterwards, one battery even exploded!!! don't waste your money on a sony mini-disc player P/N #MZN505 (theres a hyphen somewhere in it) BUT, i got one of those Sony CD-R/RW, MP3, CD players . best I could have of imagined. it has an LCD that displays title, time (elapsed on the track), batt. power, volume, album, has cool graphics at startup, and gets many "thats a B*tchin CD player!"'s. it's black and has a jog knob, it's a little wheel to scroll through tracks (kinda like the iPod), a real blessing with 400 MP3's on a disc. excellent aesthetics (sp?). P/# D-NE518CK MY RECCOMENDATION, TWO THUMBS UP. i don't see why people spend money on little 256Mb MP3 players, i got my Discman for $80, but i get 700Mb storage, how much is a GOOD quality 512Mb player? plus i get to play regular cd's and it has a car remote, not sure on a headphone splice remote (do that describe it well?) pros: pretty much everything I'd need, LCD, good sound, good looks, MP3 compatibility, folder skip buttons, and REALLY deep Bass (low quality mp3, can't hear a word, need good tracks) Cons: i'd like to have a backlight on it, but that would mess up with its 55hr (i think, seems like it anyway, on AAx2)
If you cant figure that out, you dont diserve to be own an iPod! Volume up/down, next song, last song, play/pause/stop
upon searching the internet i have found some heres some ipod parodies i think all the people reading this thread should at least check it out the only reason i got a small 128mb nomad muvo 1)it was cheap were i got it from only $60.00 2)i had 2 cd/mp3 players they were great the fist 2 months i had them both the first one hte lcd screen went crazy and you would have to restart it by taking the batteries out in order to get it working the second one the lcd screen just went out completly it still works but there is noway to see what your playing 3)doubles as a thumb drive (also plays mp'3 and wma's) 4)about the size of a cigerette lighter 5)i have a large set of music i found out if you convert it to wma (i dont support wma only mp3)at a low bitrate i can get over 100 songs on there 6)although it comes with software you do not need to install it to put songs on it just plug it in and the computer see's it as a drive i have not tried it in linux but it should be just as easy. if i had the money i would deffently get the 20gb iriver the one yall were talking about not the ipod i like the power to just drag and drop with out installing any thing
Sorry bout the off topic'nes, but I just have to give another side to the MZ n-505 story, i have had one since they came out, gets used nearly every day, done a fair bit of recording on it, and it has never given me any problems (part from god awful software), worth the cash IMO. back on topic, glad to see someone has the sense to try and fix the ipod rather than just can it, i still want an Ipod (saying that some of the others do look tempting these days)
Beisdes my Digital Camera, my iPod is the only thing I bought one of those service contracts on. I've had my iPod replaced twice so far with no hassle @ CompUSA. My ipod went with me everywhere, gaffing power poles, crawling thru crawl spaces, and crashing down ski slopes (U try finding one in the snow). I'm actually very happy with it's durability. I just hate the battery- the thing doesn't last long if you charge it off a car adapter and it hates the cold.
My parody on iPod: BTW: First time using GIMP :O And responding to that, yes, the iRiver remote does have a display, but i 100% disagree with you that its easier to use. With the ipod remote, if you dont think thats easy, then you shouldn't be using a VCR or ANY media player, because its 4 ****ing buttons!!!
My iPod got run over by a Chevy Impala. /sigh Amazingly enough the only thing broken is the screen and control pad.
One word: "How?" Unlucky, man. Feel for ya. I broke my m8's iPod by telling it to play a song. It just totally froze up. As there is no on/off button, had to wait for it to run out of power. But when we recharge it, it does the same thing..."Death by normal usage".
the three i got didn't work tho, could be they were the only three defective ones built. i just won't be buying one in the near... ever
My brothers ipod did that, after a few days yes days(not one continuis call) to their tech support guy they sent a box for it n sent it back, few weeks later a nice shiney one arrived, which has cracked around the headphone socket like whats happened here. currently i have claimed it as he doesn't use it. AW3K
I had mine do that to. From Apple: Reset Your iPod If the iPod is not responding and appears to be frozen: Connect iPod to its power supply, toggle the Hold switch on and off, and press the "Play/Pause" and "Menu" buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, then release them. If you continue to hold down the reset buttons the iPod will display a low battery icon and must be connected to power before it will work again. This usually happens to me when I'm jogging, but this fixes it ever time
that is just so apple 'your mac has stopped working, please hold 12 buttons whilst doing a jig to reboot)
