Hey everyone, I need some GPU advice...

The time has finally come to say goodbye to my trusty old 8800GT, which sadly passed away earlier today after many, many years of faithful service. One minute we were happily on the Windows desktop, only for the screen to flash green for a second and then fade to black... It's the end of an era :waah:

So, as the only spare graphics card I have in the house is a rancid GeForce 6200 (with Turbocache!), I rather desperately need a new GPU. Having not bought one for something like 6 years, I'm a bit behind the times and need some help.

Resolution is 1680 x 1050 (edit: now looking at 1920 x 1200), so I won't need anything monstrous, but I do want something as quiet as possible and reasonably power-efficient. Budget is £100-£120 (edit: now £120-£150 with no real wiggle room), but could stretch a wee bit if necessary, especially if a quieter cooler is an option. No real preference between red and green teams, although I'm slightly biased in favour of nVidia purely because I loved my 8800GT so much :D

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Now, let's raise a glass to the 8800GT! Cheers!

    Update:
I still haven't got round to buying a new GPU, but my monitor is about to be replaced so I want to make sure that the new monitor and graphics card are a good match. I'm going for a Dell U2412M, so need something that'll be happy at 1920 x 1200. Would a 1gb 7850 still be ok, or should I be pushing to 2gb at this resolution? If I'm going to 2gb, would a 660 be better than a 7850, or is there an other alternative out there that I'm missing?

Budget for the GPU is £120 to £150, and can't really be stretched much further as the Dell has already stretched things

Something around a GTX 560 or a AMD 6850 would do nicely at that res, 460's aren't far off a 560 and you can overclock them.

I'd aim for either a 6870 or a GTX 560. The 6870 seems to randomly go on sale for stupidly low prices on this side of the pond, so i'd keep an eye out for good deals on it.

Can't seem to view the marketplace forum - is that because I don't have enough posts or something?

    Cheers mate :)

If I go down the 560 route, what's the stock cooler like, and are there are recommended quiet alternatives? Not looking to go water-cooled, would rather stick with air for now :)

My 560TI could get a little loud with it's stock single fan, but that's because I set the fan to make sure the GPU never went above 80c, the default setting was quieter but hotter.

Now I've re-timmed it, it is much quieter at the same temp.

I expect the 560 would produce less heat

Thanks, but I'm not in the market for water cooling - would prefer to find a nice quiet air-cooled card.

Anyone have any suggestions for a 460 / 560 range card with a nice quiet cooler?

I nabbed a MSI GTX460 768MB Cyclone card for £55 delivered and its practically inaudible, so perhaps a card with that cooler?

Also the gigabyte 460 OC model is silent

Cheers guys. Reckon the 480 might be a bit noisy (and thirsty), but will check out the
    7850.
N17 dizzi, I take it that 460 was second hand?
