Hi there, I want a silent PC and cant afford Watercooling now. So i was wondering would there be any thing needed to be taken into consideration in replacing the CPU fan (not heatsink) with a silent fan of the same size (will measure later if no problems) and would I need a low profile one for the screws to be able to fit fine or would any do? (on a AMD Chip. AM2+ to be precise) Or would it just be easier to get a brand new HSF and thermal paste?
I'd just get a new complete fan and heatsink. Also consider some cheap sound dampening mat for your case panels.
You could get a new fan for the HSF itself but the new fan is only going to work just as good as the HSF can draw heat away from the CPU, best bet would be to go for a completely new HSF and Fan. Looking at the CustomPC magazine, the Scythe Mugen 2 is one of the best for the socket type you specified. It is a bit pricey but it should do a better job than the one you have at the moment which I assume is the one that came with the CPU? Click HERE for the Scythe Mugen 2. Alternatively, you could go for the Titan Fenrir TTC-NK85TZ which is cheaper and does just as good a job, if not better. Click HERE for the Titan Fenrir TTC-NK85TZ. Dont forget some high quality TIM (Thermal Interface Material) for betweent he CPU and the HSF which needs to be replaced every time you remove the HSF. I recommend Arctic Cooling MX-2 Hope this helps
the mugen 2 was the one i was looking at, as for paste/ TIM i was looking at Arctic 5 silver however will give the Mx-2 a go. Thanks for the advice
Either or will do, as long as there is a good quality TIM in place then all should be good! Hope it goes to plan for you!
Hi Invictus I have a Titan Fenrir cooling my i7 920 and I can't hear it above the low rush of my Antec 300's case fans at Medium. It's not a silent build by any stretch of the imagination, but it's quite quiet. Good cooler, despite my poor cable management skills. +1 for the Fenrir.
