really sorry if this has been asked previously, but i just bought a DVD-ROM drive and want to replace its LED with a blue one (to keep in synch with the rest of my case). the problem is it uses a two-colored one. is it safe to use a single-colored LED in place of that?
also--is it possible to replace a double-colored LED with two single-colored ones (but use the same negative lead).
sorry i'm sorta new to working with these components.
    thanks,

I would suggest replacing it with a dual colored one. Two singles isn't going to work well, and why have a single when you can take advantage of a dual LED! :)
Dual color LED's are sold just about whereever you would find single colored.

probably better off putting this question in the electronics section!

if it's a two colo(u)r affair then when you put in a single colour one how are you gonna know what the drive is up to?

for instance on my writer it's green if there's a disk in it and orange if it's writing or reading.

    just a thought!

btw guys has anyone found an article showing someone changing the leds in their drive? in particularly curious about my plextor cd writer cos it looks outta place with the standard leds!

well the reason i'd want to replace with two leds instead of one is because i've never seen a red-blue dual-colored LED..
it's a dvd-rom drive, in fact i don't even know why it has a dual-colored one..i guess to show when it's playing or not or something..
but i've desoldered the led's in my other drives and replaced them and they work fine..i'm sure i should have researched more on voltage and stuff to make sure the new leds wouldn't interfere but i haven't had any problems..

Heh, I was searching for red/blue LED's VERY recently, couple days ago.. I posted in the For Sale/Wanted section..
A tip before continuing your search: Don't. They just plain don't exist except for RGB LED's. The Red/blue combo would have looked so nice in my bay bus *sigh*, and would have looked great in your DVD-ROM as well. :(
