Just looking for a a little critique on this build. I'm teaching 3DS Max and general 3D modeling from home and need a new rig as mine is starting to get a little decrepit (its I5 ffs). I also do free lance 3D work so i need something that i can use to render at home. Im a little limited on space or i would set up my own farm. want to try and keep it to one case. My budget is £10,000 but i plan using the extra to get a 3D printer (not essential but i have the 10k put aside for hardware and if i don't spend it the wife will probably go nuts on handbags.) I do a little bit of gaming but that isn't really the priority ( just a nice optional extra ) This is the build I'm planning at the moment: https://www.dropbox.com/sc/18vtxw1y7n1auk9/ZH9wD5tu2I
Looks like a decent rig to me - I'd probably go for a Corsair AX series PSU, or probably a Seasonic though - power hungry hardware likes clean power
The HX PSUs are decent, but I'd probably go for an AX PSU (lots of those made by Seasonic) or a Seasonic X-series, for longeivity and quality.
That will certainly do the job but if you have 10, 000 then I think it can be better spent. First off get yourself two good monitors 27 inchish and a high end machine, mine cost me £3000 and I haven't run into any problems with speed so far. I would say a render farm is a must these days, it also doesn't need to be massive mines an old server bolted to the back of my desk. Back-ups, I use a three tier system first it backs up to my render farm pc hds, then my external hardrive, finally to my cloud storage. I also use google drive to store my model library so I can access it on the move. Finally a damn good chair!
+1 for a Seasonic - I've got the X-1050 and it's a great PSU and their customer service is fantastic should anything go wrong Edit: Hang on - why two Titans? Aren't the 780 TIs faster and cheaper?
Not for rendering - I think the Titan is the better choice there, as far as I understand it (VRAM to the max)
Still rumours abound about an Ultra Titan! If you're dropping that much money it might be an idea to wait a couple of weeks.
I'm sure I read somewhere that Nvidia stated on some sort of blog that buying Titans now is a bad idea. I'm not sure if it meant that they're going to drop in price, or if a replacement is coming, or if they mean that they're not worth it for gamers due to the 780ti. TBH the Titan is still an enormous lot cheaper than the Tesla, so I still can't really say they're bad value given how expensive a Tesla is and the fact this is for a work rig.
If its 3d work and rendering would he not benefit from one of those specialized nvidia Quadro cards or ATI FirePro cards?
Thanks for the reply but I really don't have the space for another tower, never mind a farm. I already have 3x high end monitors at 22" cant imagine why i would need 27" and already have a 4TB NAS drive and independent backup drive. none of this however would help me improve my work. I have had issues with security on cloud storage drives in the past and don't trust them (rightly or wrongly) so wont be using those. I am actually getting a new chair too though Ill keep an eye out for the Titan details. just so i know, how important would you say the upgrade will be for the PSU from HX1050 to an AX? i ask because i actually already have a HX1050 in my current machine and was hoping to reuse it, iv only had it a few of months.
Enermax do outstanding PSUs. Had you considered the Platimax range? Can't speak highly enough of the brand given I run a small 400 Watt Enermax Liberty PSU with an overclocked E8500, GTX 480 and 8800GTS PhysX card all in the same build!
Enermax really are the dogs danglies. Mine survived being taken apart and left in it's box for 6th months while i fanied around with the case. If my postman pat hands can't break it, nothing will. Also I'd suggest investing in a chest freezer full of pimmies pies ;-)
M-ITX render farm? I did a concept for myself before I got out of that mad stage (yes... I've reverted back to corrugated cardboard site models and etcetera) and you can get some insane densities if you work hard at it I think I squeezed 10 nodes into a Lian Li PC-A10... took a bit of work squeezing it in, and building it would be even tougher... And have you seen this rather elegant farm solution?
Np didn't know if you had monitors already. Fair enough not trusting cloud services as long as you have a backups nothing worse than an angry client breathing down your neck. What type of CG work do you do anyhow?
i work mainly in teaching but have done quite a few things from games to architecture. working on my first original game at the moment. as such i don't have access to the resources of a full size company for rendering etc. Initially i was going to aim for a quatro but ive been told they are being overtaken now.
