Now, ive been saying this for a while now (about 2 years) and I do believe its because they get to know what they like and have more oppertunity to try out new artists. I know that was always the case for me. Now I only get my music through naspter/Itunes I barely listen/purchase anything as its going to cost me money only to find out its pap.

Eegads! Could it be? That maybe a lot of piracy really IS a consumer revolt against the stupid, horrible distribution systems of the past and record company bloat?

Why yes, yes it could be. I've got an advanced hypothesis on the continuance of this study: As more music becomes available through digital download, piracy will drop in volume, and the pirates will still spend the most money on obtaining things legally.

Because, as has been stated so many times before (and argued against only by "oh, but piracy is wrong!"), if you price a product by the free market's willingness to pay for it, the free market will buy it. And if they're buying it, they have no need to steal it. There will always be some piracy, but really...if you want to drop the problem down significantly, start charging what people will actually willingly pay for a good if they have need of it. Perhaps MS and hollywood should take some notes...

Precisely…..could not have said it any better.

To boot the Music people and the Movie people are the one complain the most. But they always use the phrase “potential losses” which means that 90% of the movies that were Downloaded were never going to be bought in the first place. Id never go buy HellBoy at full price I saw it a few times but its not worth 25$

Music on the other hand….. I DL music, full albums even but the stuff that is actually good I go out and buy. Its also better quality and the CD looks much nicer. Then I make a back up to use in my car because it seems to eat cds and I got tired of loosing 50-80$ worth of music.

A music artist doesn’t make $$ on CDs it’s the Concerts that they charge 60$ a head that keeps them rich.

But I don’t really hear the PC games people complaining and they are the ones who suffer the MOST form piracy and they actually suffer.

When I was at uni and had less money and a modem (no MP3 Dl for me) I spent allot more on music now where I have more money and 2mb broadband.

Fact is that the illegal sites I visit are better than the paying ones. I can download full discography for an entire band at 192kbps in one night..

I think Itunes will have to be allot cheaper to get me away from illegal stuff.

That said... I still buy games retail as pirate ones are usually more trouble.. I like to buy the CD and play the game.. not have to find a site and crack it and mess around.

What noise does a pig make ?

I don't see how it could be that people download music, like what they hear and then buy the exact same thing from iTumes or Napster. What would make people download the same thing twice?

No one's mentioned this yet but I think it's simply down to people who use P2P software being less afraid of downloading music than getting at the record store. They probably understand all the music formats, audio quality and DRM restrictions that you get with downloaded music. It makes sense that they would be more likely to download their music whether they pay for it or not.

I don't download music, but since I started ripping my own CD collection (200+ CDs) to my harddrive four months ago, I've bought more music than I'd bought in the preceeding year...

... and copying one's own CDs is another thing that we're not supposed to do, because it's 'bad for the industry' or some b*ll like that.

I always download it first, then if I like it I will go and buy a proper CD version. Why would I want to pay for something that may be shite? Need to test it first, and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay for a restrictred copy when I can get an unrestricted copy for free. Simple as that.

I agree that something needs to be done, but DRM just pisses me off. Like games, I have bought all the games I play often and enjoy, but still use a no-CD crack as I can't be bothered constantly changing CDs. Are they trying to put people off buying legitimate copies?
