How would I get the output voltage after placing a resister in the line?

For example: 12v in plus resister (### ohms) = ##v out

I'm sure linear will come down here and post the formula here, but in the meantime, you can also check the "electronics" forum, in there there's a sticky thread with the formula in

Ohm's law, baby! V=IR. Combine it with Kirchoff's loop rule to get:
    V(after) = V(before) - I*R

i made a resistance calc, a resistor color calc, a resistor chart listing all the values make and a ohm calc on my page: http://www.brutal.tk look under Electronics Calculators

To calculate the resistor you need to know the current. Without a current the voltage will still be 12V.

    Formua as above

Might be easier basing on the resistance of the load (as I is not the rated I), then

    New load voltage = 12 * load resistance/(load resistance + resistor value)

And load resistance = 12/rated current at 12v
    or 144/Rated Power
