Have any of you tried this? I did it with my friend a few years ago. Didn't have a dgital camera back then, so no pics. But what we did, is we took apart an old boom box we picked up at the dump, and we were using a pair of wire cutters to try and pry off a resistor, you know, one of the big ones you get at RadioShack, not those fancy microscopic one on most mo-bos. Anyways, I gave up trying to cut the wires to it, so I just tried cutting it down the middle. I got the cutters around the middle, and squeezed. Dude! You have to try that sometime! They are like fire crackers! My friend saw me do it and was like "Dude thats awsome!!" so we cut some more off, and started snapping them with the cutters. Almost all of them made a flash and a bang as they split apart! This was like 3 years ago, and I still find bits of resistor on the floor from time to time... Oh yeah, the big ones work really well! Chynn
I just tried to pop a few with some needle nose pliers (the wire cutter part) and didn't get anything, I tried some carbon film, some metal film, and a few inductors also. Nothing, Oh well maybe it was some strage kind of resistor.
wow, what a waste conkbot but yeah, it was probably some OLD kind that they stopped making for this exact reason
They were just some componets that I pulled off some old circut boards I found in some junk laying around the neighborhood, nothing I payed for, no big loss. EDIT: BTW, the circuit boards manufacturing date was 1986 and 1987. So the popping resistors must have been really old then.
They MUST BE caps either electrolytic or tantalum caps.. have you ever reversed the polarity on tantalum caps? with 5 V reversed it kind of explodes and starts to burn nice way of triggering bombs
I had some t**t's in my electronics class that used to do this all the time, stupid ******s just pissed about all lessons, delayed our learning and now they are gonna wonder why the got such crap grades. Man that was good to get off my chest.
At least you DID electronics, the electronics teacher left like the year before we chose our options.
the coolest thing is when bottle rockets explode under water. u can fill a soda bottle with water and drop it on and the bottle will jump into the air!
i may of done electronics but tbh it was a waste of time imho, the first teacher we had wouldnt of gotten us A's easily hes one of those people that no matter if you dont like it , hell make you work, so at least we learnt something, he left went to another school. Teacher 2 comes along, now hes an ex-navy/sailor guy, hes a big man, and hes not really a teacher...he smelt drunk every lesson, and probably was, and for hte first 3 weeks taught us how to use this CAD program techsoft, come to think of it he actually taught his electronics, graphics, resistant materials classes the same thing. He left shortly after due to a health problem ( cancer ) and now we have a really young guy whose probably just left the school teachers go to, hes tried to teach us what he can but he has no experience, so i dont know how we'll fair. In the exams all i can say was that i was not taught at least 25% of wha was on it, but i am quite a bright fella so using some inititive i just made an 'educated guess'.
Last year I took a Electronics course, and each day we used to blow up some resistors or capacitors(sp?). We even made a rig for it in our metalchop class. We took to clamps and attached those to the feet of the "victim", then flicked a switch on the box we made. That caused 230V to pour through the "victim", thus causing it to explode and/or burn. I'm telling you, the things one learn at school. Priceless!
all i learnt in electronics class was how to look up the girls skirts from the teachers seat (he was weird) but my dads an electrician/electrical engineer so i learnt alot off him and now i'm making my own circuts for things like water leakage from certain areas of a watercooling system and temp sensors to speed up a pump and fan or slow them down when comp is idle (still working on that one i can only get it to work with A64 due to the cool and quiet tech) but yeah i didn't learn anything but i pop capacitators all the time (try monitor ones ) or try hooking a monitor CRT votage through them) also use an old microwave to cook multiple thingo's anyway i love destroying things like that i wish i knew the components u had
The eighties weren't that long ago... My bet is on standard ceramic caps, just squeezing them hard enough with wire cutters to shatter the ceramic. That would certainly pop, but I can't see an actual "explosion"
Let's see... [fx: wibbly flashback mode] Many moons ago I was on an electronics course where we had to make amplifiers using germanium transistors. One guy mistakenly wired his backwards, so when he powered it up, the transistor can launched about 20feet due up! Another time, after I got a job due to having completed the course, I was building a charger circuit for a portable cassette player, but I must have had a diode inverted or something, because a 5W wirewound resistor suddenly started doing a great impression of an electric fire with only 12V DC through it! [end fx: wibbly flashback mode]
your all quite lucky. i would love to have an eletronics class offered at school. i'm definatly going to tear into some old electronics now and try to blow up a couple resistors.
