My case (Jeantech Phong) has a fanbus on the side of it and I've managed to pull one of the wires off one off :duh:

The colours on the resistor (from right to left) are yellow, purple, brown (maybe red) and gold. After a bit of google, I think I need a 470 ohm resistor with a tolerance of ±5%. Does that sound correct? If so, where can I buy one in the UK? I had a look at maplins, but it's a difference language to me

If it's 470R, then you need maplin part number G470R.

If it's 4.7k (yellow, purple, red) M4K7 is what you'll want.

you can buy them everywhere, as long as you know where to fix it back onto, you can replace it with a resistor of the same markings. do you knwo the wattage? if not, better go with a .5watt (it looks about that)

These vary from maplins 7p per resistor to rapids 60p pere 100 resistors.

    MAPLIN:

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=5729&TabID=1&source=15&WorldID=3&doy=12m3

    look for:

    2W RES 470R

    code:

    D470R

    still V expensive.. :sigh:

Err, nope  The power for the fan it controls comes from the motherboard (3 pin) if that helps?

    Thanks guys :)

EDIT: 1p for the resistor, £2.50 for delivery :eeek:
Maybe I'll wait 'til Monday and ask/steal one from the electronics guru at Uni :D

I think he's asking about the wattage of the fan being run through that resistor. ?maybe? Or perhaps if you can ID the wattage of the resistor... I didn't think there was an easy way to ID wattage on those.

    Oh right

On the sticker it says 12v, 0.22A :)

Ohm's Law (& Power Law) rules. On any system, worst case (straight across the power rails) power needed is V2/R, 0.31W for 470R on a 12V system. So 0.5W or the standard Maplin 0.6W M470 would be OK, the 2W is a bit overkill. ;)

The fan won't be inline with the resistor & pot, it will be part of a semiconductor control circuit, either inside the fan (like some Enermax fans with the control knob on the end of a wire) or something like a 317T.

What's the difference between the M470k and the M470R?

The 470k is four thousand seventy thousand ohms of resistance. The 470r is 470 ohms of resistance.

470k = Four hundred and seventy thousand... :eyebrow:

The resistor looks to be in series with the pot resistance, so I'd gamble on 470 ohms. Is it possible to read the pot value? Often stamped on the back.

The resistor is also 0.25W for definite. 0.5W are a different shape. May as well get one of each (4k7 and 470R) since they're so cheap.

Do you have a multimeter or anything to test the resistance with?

Don, the electronics guy at Uni gave me a 0.25W resisitor. I installed it and everythings working again
