Okay, my dad got a digital camera yesterday, and whilst I've been happily snapping away until now, I need something that will help resize and reduce the file size of the images - 800k seems to be the typical file size of the images when using maximum quality, and thats no good to anyone really for posting in the web as its totally un-necessary to have that much detail, and loading times start to get annoying with images that large....

I know most people use photoshop or PSP for this sort of thing, but I don't have this software, and I don't need all the features these packages offer, so shelling out for them would be a bit of a waste.

Basically I just want something easy to use that just deals with resizing/compressing jpeg images, freeware if possible - yahoo throws up loads of suggestions, but the ones I tried were either demo versions that wouldn't let you save the resized image, or were just rubbish!

When I can't be bothered to fire up Photoshop, I use the Microsoft Photo Editor that gets bundled with Office. I know its in with office2K at least.
It is really basic but lets you Save As jpeg using a compression amount slider. You can crop and resize images too, and sharpen them up etc.

Not as effective as using "save for web" in photoshop, but you might already have MS photo editor on your computer. look in All Programs > M$ office tools >

You can get older versions of PSP for free that will do the resizing easily.

http://www.imagemagick.org/ has a Linux command line resize utility. Just create a script to resize everything in a directory for you.

Most digital camera's come bundled with some photo-editing software. Or at least their own photo-viewer / editor.

I assume you're running XP? Then why not Image Resizer PowerToy for XP? Does the job. Right click on your image and select from 3 (or 4?) presets, or define your own size.

Nice easy option that fully integrates and has zilch loading times. :)

Yeah, either the Power Toys for XP as ^^ said or Infranview (I think you can do batch operations with this)

An advantage of the freeware IrfanView linked ^^ is that you can also crop out any unwanted background round the edges. :thumb:

I'm a fan of the freeware program "Easy Thumbnails" It'll resize to any size and save just about any format or quality setting..

The image resizer powertoy is quite useful, but my vote goes to IrfanView - just because its more configurable and adaptable...

You know most people don't actually pay for photoshop :worried:

If you want a legal program with just about all the features of photoshop - try The Gimp. It's an open source kinda thing and completely free.

Try a Google search for GIMP :naughty:
