    Hey ElectroWhizzes!
    I've got a question for you.
    I've recently been given and older junked LG phone, with 2 nice color graphical screens. I'd like to reuse these (and possibly the camera lens assembly) as little mini mods to display monitoring data or graphics. There's no battery life left, but it does charge and power up fine with the cord in. I figure I can work out some way to power it off the PSU.

    Anyone have good links they can suggest dealing with reusing phone lcds in particular, or finding specs on these screens?

    I've read the LCD faq, and will go back in more depth, but a quick search didn't find anything on phone LCDs there.

    These are the general phone specs on the display. No partnumbers as of yet as I haven't pulled it apart.
    * Type LCD display
    * Technology TFT
    * Line Qty 11
    * Display Resolution 176 x 220 pixels
    * Color Support Color
    * Color Depth 18-bit (262000 Colors)
    * Display Indicators Voice message waiting , Text message waiting
    * Multi-language Menu Yes
    * Display Languages English , Spanish
    * Features Wallpaper , Screensaver

    Display (2nd)

    * Type LCD display - Color
    * Display Resolution 96 x 96 pixels

    I've found a couple other links:

    Sorry for the very general question, and lack of specific part numbers.

    I'm curious to see if you know of projects implementing this.

    [IMG]

    Let me see if I can find a log

    "keyboard with lcd"

    "mouse with lcd"

    Thanks for the replies guys!
    I'd seen the mektu mouse mod before... forgot about it, so I'll have to go back and check it out.

    I know a lot of folks use Nokia parts... know about LG parts?

    Dismantled it, and have a little more info, which hasn't helped me at all.
    The 2 LCDs are joined back to back on a piece labeled IM200CST3A Epson v06 05/02/24.
    I haven't found anything useful with that.

    Other numbers are the flexible interface piece that the lcds & camera are plugged into with connectors: FPCB rev10 LGE SPCY004001. The mainboard is SPFY0082402.

    the main problem with these kinds of LCD's is getting the right controller, that was the problem with older laptop lcd's too

    if you can get a pinout of the lcd/controller it may make it easier to decide whether or not its possible to use the screen

    I've done a bit more searching and drifting among the webs, looking for more details on this. I'm thinking the Epson part is the controller board, embedded between the 2 LCDs. I just can't reconcile that number with an actual part on the epson site, even in the discontinued section.

    I found a bunch of links if anyone else wants to do something similar. There was a project started here on bit-tech but not finished with a nokia screen in a laptop.

    I can't believe I hadn't thught of hackaday as a source. lcdinfo looks promising as well.

    yeah, it appears that most of the popular screens to mod come from old nokias which isn't so surprising... there were a lot of them in circulation for a long time.
    Someone's got to have used these screens before. After all, they've gotta be commonly sourced, and epson apparently is big in this field. I just need to figure out how to match this to a part number. I may have to remove the display from the epson package and see.

    The connectors are really tiny... everything is Surface Mount. My hope is that I'll need nothing from the main board, and that I could successfully hack in power and data lines.

    Edit1 - I'd put up pics, but I broke my camera last week... :( Anyone know of a cheap replacement lens assembly for the Casio Exilim Z75?

    Edit2 - Found these 3 pages of epson lcd matrix controller datasheets: http://www.datasheetcatalog.com/epsoncompany/1/
    ...but nothing matches mine.

    Hey Loom,
    Thanks for asking! Nah, no luck so far. I've shelved this project for later and will get back to it after another project I'm working on is done at the end of this month. (That doesn't mean I won't appreciate help before then!)

    Okey dokes, please post here if you have any updates. If you only want to display pictures a quick solution is to use one of those small digital key rings - you can get one for less than £5 on eBay. To my experience you can expect their menus to be a bit dodgy (e.g. not displaying the time correctly etc.) but for displaying a static picture/slide show it's an inexpensive mod requiring only a bit of soldering to relocate buttons etc.

    Thanks Loom, I will definitely be updating later...

    Well, the point is to reuse an existing one I have in hand, rather than spending money on a new one. I don't think this is OLED.

    Sorry, I don't understand?

    Thanks for all the responses guys. Let me know if there is anything else needed that I can provide to help with the research!

    Rather than try and get a controller for the screen, could you try and get some software to put on the phone to allow it to work as an external screen? It would certainly make your life easier if you could.

    It is definitely possible for Win Mo phones.

    pizzarsSingh reported btw.

    Why? was he spamming? I was thinking it was just a 2nd lang issue, or a case of too much drugs? :lol:

    Yeah, I've been thinking of just sticking the whole phone circuitry in there and trying to run it off the psu, it's small enough. Unfortunately not a windows os. I don't know that I would be able to add a program to whatever it is that runs. It's an LG, think I quoted the model # up above, and cant remember... VX7000 or somesuch.

    I've looked at something that runs on palmOS (palmorb & LCD Smartie) and emulates a matrox orbital... but the ones I have are grayscale... they'll come into use eventually, but I'd really like to reuse this pretty decent small color display.

    I also have a couple camera color LCDs that I'd like to use.
