It all started this morning, When I woke up at 7:30. My clock said 12:33 and my TV refused to stay on for more then 5 seconds. All the lights were a dark orange and no other appliances worked. At 8 when I got back from driving past the school to witness several hundred kids standing out, All the power was out. At 8:30ish the power came back on but now my desktop computer no longer works. I'm sure it must be the PSU because the lights on the internal WIFI card do not come on and would even if the computer was off but plugged in. Its a cheap PSU and I'm hoping it didn't take anything else with it. Would I hold RG&E responsible for this? Its not like I woke up and took an axe to the computer or wished for this. I pay for electricity and expect to receive reliable electricity, and when my hardware dies I want retribution, because I don't have the money to fix my computer even if its just a power supply.

Won't it be covered by your home insurance anyway?

Read the T&C. There's bound to be a get-out clause for "Acts of God". You could try suing Him.

If it is the PSU and its died because of a surge or what ever they would more than likly claim that you should have had a Surge Protector, which lets face it, you should. They're not very expensive and they have their own insurance. Good luck either way though dood. :dremel:

Well...you get what you pay for, I suppose.

    Sh*t happens. Welcome to life.

I think you've learned a lesson here: A $10 surge protector may have saved your expensive computer. Nevertheless, don't expect the power company to pay for this.

"Brownout, blackout, power surge" sounds about right.
Replace your PSU and hope for the best. Stuff still in warranty?

Pick up a Belkin Surgemaster. Quality surge protectors. Even the home editions come with a £10,000 damed equipment warranty; i.e. anything damaged by a surge will be replaced, up to the value of 10 grand.

older/cheaper surge protectors won't protect against a brownout, the power is lowering not spiking

I'd start reading the paperwork for the surge protector and try to claim off their connected equipment warranty if it has one. You never know...
