Someone gave me one of these:

And I have been thinking of ways to use it. On way is to back light my monitor but I also want to use some of it in my PC. Obviously I will need to buy a second remote/controller but rather than have the PC lights connected to a separate PSU can I cut the a length of cable with the power connection point and connect the other end to a molex and therefore connect the controller directly to the PC's internal PSU?

Yes you can, in fact I helped a friend do exactly that a few weeks back, then did my own PC not long after... give me a few mins and I'll post some pics :)

My controller was different to the one you've got, but the mod will be the same, just replace the power lead with a molex connector.

    Here's what I started with:

First I stripped the wrapping off the PCB:

Desoldered the wires for the power lead:

I wired up a molex connector, then soldered it to the PCB in place of the original power lead:

a shoddy job on the soldering I know, it was fiddly and to hold it in place I ended up crushing the wire with pliers, but it works so I called it a success :)

Here's the finished mod with new heat shrink and sleeving:

I tied the IR receiver into an empty drive bay, it's hidden behind the mesh cover when the front of the case is on but the remote works fine through the mesh.

Finally here are some shots of the end result:

Do you have the other bits you need? Wire, connector etc.

If not I can send you some if you like.

Good thinking. For a minute there I thought that I did not have any cabling but fortunately I have a bunch of cables for a long gone but dead PSU so that's covered and yes I also have plenty of connectors.

Thanks for your kind offer though.

No worries, I have plenty of odds and ends, thought if you didn't have them it might save you a few quid :)
