Your Milage Might Vary, in other words you might try something and come up with a different result from someone else. Its a phrase used by US companies to protect themselves legally.

cpemma if I can't source the any pots below 10kohm, what should the values for the other resistors be? (note the pots I can get at 10kohm, 1/2W, linear)

I'm pretty sure the values for the resistors should change, Ideally i want it to yield the same results as the version you show on your site

I'm also trying to follow the article written by Nox

cedarlow, 1K pots are fairly common, you shouldn't have a problem.

Most 317 makers recommend around 240R for the fixed resistor. Nox has followed that and worked out the 2k pot was needed, I did the same but made the case for 1k pot + 1k resistor = 2k.

At a pinch you could try a 4k7 pot (also common) and a 620R resistor in the nox circuit, but with a 10k pot you'd need about 1k2 for that resistor and the current down the resistor-pot chain may be too low for proper regulation to occur.

    Or 32p at Rapid. :D

One I got from ESR is ST branded, they're a top firm.

Compare any component, Maplin are expensive.

cedarlow - most uk ppl have to mail-order components or buy online, component shops are few and far between. We had Tandy some years back, but they were very high prices

I only live 10 minutes from the main Maplin warehouse, but unless I'm in a rush I don't use them - cheaper to pay delivery and go elsewhere.

    /me also plugs rapid

    rapid rule so much cheaper
tandy was good and not as expensive as maplins but went bust

oh btw cpemma thx for the design of the rotary switch/diode fan controller it gets hot but dfosent burn so i assume its ok :D

maplin is what i used to use but they are allways out of stock or have discontinued stuff and i eventually found rapid and while they dont stock some stuff they do most of the useful stuff and at £2.50 for next day thats pretty good

Rapid have fairly high delivery (£2.50), ESR is lower (£1.50) so a few pence saved on component prices may get swallowed.

But with a big order (over £30), Rapid give free delivery and also refund the catalogue price.

One snag with Rapid is quite a few cheap items (resistors, small capacitors, grommets, etc) come in 100s minimum. Good point is that everything comes in an individually-labelled packet.

I'm making a fan bus like this, to acomidate my 7.2 watt cpu fan, about .6amps.

Will I have many problems running it towards 7-8 volts? I'm not sure exactly how to figure out the power from the 317t, any ideas?

Will I need a big heatsink for this motha?

Will thermal compound be needed? Or will just plain epoxy do alright? Will the epoxy NOT conduct heat or something bad like that?

    Thanks in advance,
