Automatics are used in drag racing a lot in the US. The fastest times are with autos. But...

There are a few guys in the 8's (1/4 mile) running manuals. They probably don't touch the clutch after they leave the line but switching gears still takes time. That's a standard box. The Lenco trans is a bit unique. You don't use the clutch and each gear has its own lever. There are also sequential gear boxes..with practice, a Lenco is just about as fast.

For fun on the curves (not streetraces..) get a manual.

If you can afford a Supra but buy a Civic instead, you are a loser.

Enough with the variable valve timings. The 1930's caddys had virable valve timings. Suck it up people nothing special. Every 4 cyl engine has that crap.

V-tech = crap on a stick. A granade wating to explode and a high rpm engine with no usable low tourque. Gorw up. Its a economy car and always will remain an economy car. Thats why I can smoke civics of any year in my stock chevy astro. Yup thats a 6000lb van smoking a small car. Grow up and get real cars. Sheshhh.

I already have the Civic that was the point in the post, as to whether I buy the Supra to replace my Civic, although this thread is running old now, and the Supra I was looking at has been sold, I am looking at 2 other cars both quite rare, these are a Mazda RX-4 (Handling, reliablity and fuel economy of a Jap car and looks of an American Muscle car) or a Skyline GTS4. Any Ideas?

After driving manuals for a while, I switched over to a 2003 model standard, and the clutch gave out very quickly, but because the user is so much in control, this part/labor is not covered by any warranties. The part is obviously bad, but because I'm in control, I'm being held responsible.

Keep that in mind if you ever buy a car and plan to have it warrantied. If the part is bad in an automatic, it is covered in a warranty, if it is in a manual it is covered by you.

I wouldn't buy an automatic from 15 years ago, but they've gotten very good lately, IMO.

the oldskool jap cars had terrible autos, tbh i wouldnt touch an automatic car that wasnt made post 98~ and especially in an even older as the power wont be smooth throughtout the engine range and you wont be able to take full advantage of your car.

Yeh rite. Keep dreaming. And keep looking. Honda has just as many lemons as any other automaker.

Actualy my astrovan is a mans car. It does what I need. It carries me and my tools from the work site day in and day out no matter the weather and conditions. It gets loaded till the supension is completly down and never complains. It smokes tires if I need it to. And at the end of the day I can put the seats back in give it a vacum and remove the plywood boards covering the carpet and carry my 6 other family member to where ever they need to go. It dosent complain during anything and everything.

Ive put over 4000lb worth of concrete in it and it still hasent hicuped yet. And best of all it does it every single day baring sunday witch means its just sitting in the driveway having a rest while im sleeping.

She now has 40k on it and she is turning 3 years old. what has gone wrong? Nothing. I changed the tires because I wanted better grip and change the oil every 3k.

Before the astro we had a smller engined plymouth voyager with a 3l motor and it did the same things up to 130k+miles before my father got tired of it and wanted soemthing new as the car turned 10years old. The guy my father sold it to still has it as a work vehicle.

Yesh. Get over yourself. V-tech or whatever honda calls it is nothing special so stop using it as an excuse. My pushrod v6 will outlive most honda engines during the same work regiments. Yes its only 190hp but 384lb of tourque aint bad either.

Thats a 4.3 you've got in there, right.

Whenever I get in my parents jimmy (auto) I always try to step on the clutch and then remember ohhh auto. They got a 4.3 vortech (thirsty but good low end torque) and my sonoma 2.8l and stick can keep up fine, and get 3-10 mpg better. All around a manual is a better trans, still has better mileage, more control, better power transfer (engine to the wheels), and just more fun.

I dont think I could shift left handed though.

Vortechs are tuned badly from factory imho. IF it that car was for me only and no work was involved I would remap the ecu on it and add the front drive axle as well so its 4wd. I know they make 4wd astros but the problem is that I didnt buy the car my pop did and he didnt even consider it. Or even drop the 4.3 vortech and replace it with an real 350 sb and fuel inject it and replace the rear gears for better economy.

and the 2.8 you got in your sonoma is derived from old buick racing engines. While smaller its a very good motor.

Depends on the tranny really. A electronicaly controlled tranny with 5speeds or more properly tuned should get the same fuel economy or better than a manual. Personaly depending on the vehicle I would prefer manual but auto has its spot too.
