I'm a avid gamer, well i was.. I loved TFC (HL Mod) online, liked CS for a while but i haven't played anything in a long time and i want something new to grip me.. I don't wanna play WoW because i cba going into a world where i have to play for hours on end to be as powerful as everyone else...

I want something with a good pace, lots of hardcore action and fighting but also some substain.. It has to be online multiplayer. I have a top spec PC, 4800+, 2gb of top end ram, 7900GTX 512mb BFG (top OC'd version)... All the gubbins...

Battlefield 2142 looks great.. But i saw the older one and thought "Man that looks complex"... This one looks a little more tamed down tho...

Any reccomendations. I want a few suggestions as basically whatever you guys reccomend i'll buy. As i want 3-5 good multiplayer online games for me to sink my teeth into after work.

Thanks in advance, you all earn a cookie.

From what I can gather, BF2142 isn't up to the standard of previous BF titles.

    See: http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/battlefield2142

I'd get BF2 as it's still a massive draw online, looks great, is really good fun to play and the bugs are less numerous and serious than Bf2142 at the moment.

If you loved TFC and CS and you're after a game of similar ilk, Day of Defeat is damn good. Also, I don't know if it has online multiplayer built in, but Dark Messiah of Might & Magic looks tasty.

I hope you're aware of the spyware issue with BF2142 and the amount of bugs it has? It looks like a corker of a game, but I'm assuming it'll turn out to be another BF2, i.e. patches bigger than the moon that still don't fix all the issues.

I would suggest you test the demo first in all fairness if you are contemplating buying 2142.
Some people hate it and I personally love it. Think BF2 (without all the hardcore BF2 nublets ;) ) + Planetside + UT2004 churn them up and you have something pretty close to 2142.

I also reccomend this, it has got online multiplayer and a pretty damn good one at that.

You could think of this as like a FPS, as in a first person slasher. I don't think the game has as much RP depth like Oblivion but the combat system is awesome.

Multiplayer is kind of like BF2/return to castle wolfenstien multiplayer, you have a number of different classes, like warrior, assassin, archer and healer. It also seems to be an objective based game, where you have certain points your team needs to capture (or defend if you already hold it). I didn't get alot of play time in the multiplayer beta as I was a bit busy but from what I saw it looked very promising. With the multipayer, you also gain experience points for things like kills, when you get enough you get a point you can spend to get certain abilities (like backstab, or more health). I'm not exactly sure how this works but I think it's kind of similar to return to castle wolfenstien: enemy territory, where you have a number of rounds on a map, and all the experience you gain in the first round carries forward to the next round and then all your levels reset once the map changes. Or it could possibly be that you keep your experience untill you log off the server for a while.

I wouldn't imagine they'd make it so experience points are kept globally, otherwise new players would be at a severe disadvantage to verteran players.

This game is out tomorrow in the UK BTW, and I think it's already out in america.

Unless you like dealing with the frustration on a very buggy game, avoid BF2 and 2142 like the plague. I would say however that BF2 is a good game apart from the bugs, and IMO, 2142 is basically BF2 with a new skin on it, which is why I'm not wasting my money on it.

With BF2 (and 2142) you get weapon unlocks every time you rank up, ranking up can take a very long time to do, especially as you get higher up the command chain. I still havn't unlocked all the weapons for BF2 yet and I've been playing from release (although I had to take a year break while I was at uni).

I like BF2. Ok, it could be better developed an supported but as a game it's a good idea. But BF2142 is a step too far for me. They haven't finished BF2 yet! My impression is that BF2142 is a bit more console-y; less atmosphere and immersion, and more frantic clicking. And I agree, it's more a BF2 mod than a new game.

So the combination of worse gameplay, in-game advertising, and EA's attitude to build quality and bug-fixing means that I'll wait for the next game to come out.

The things I like most about BF2 is the team emphasis (even if often ignored) and the career stats. I'll wait for the next decent game that has similar elements in it.

Yeah if you manage to find one of those rare public servers where people actually use teamwork it's absolutely awesome.

I think I would actually prefer it though if they got rid of the whole badge and medals stuff, cos most people on the public servers are out to get a certain badge, not to play as a team and kick the others ass.

I'd also like it if they changed the score amounts you need for each of the ranks as IMO it takes way too long to get all the weapon unlocks.

BF2142's a great game. Yes it's got bugs and huge flaws, but it's still an addictive game. The futuristic feel is just what BF2 really needed to make it completely addictive.

Since I bought it, it's become my game of choice (seenas they ruined CS:S with the new radar... :\).

And unlocking in 2142 doesn't take an age unlike BF2 until you start getting to the later unlocks.
I personally find it to have far more atmosphere than BF2 ever did but then I'm into the whole sci-fi thing anyway.

Imho, the best thing about 2142 is that it seems to have drawn away most of the dodgy buggers & morons from BF2. Playing BF2 on the pubs for the last week or so has been a much more pleasurable experience.

I'm holding out for QW:ET, at least then I'll feel that I've paid good money for a whole new game & not just a bugged mod.

    :)

Infactry only has got rid of the vehicle whores, and BF2142 has got rid of most of the kids and annoying ones... I agree. It's been a lot better recently - more teamwork too. Still plenty of knobs playing, but there are always plenty to go around.

I'm going to check out QW:ET when it comes out too. There is a lot of expectation building up about it - I just hope it doesnt disappoint too.

I'd wait a bit until they settle the issues with their servers (it's improving all the time), but it's shaping up to be great fun. I've enjoyed the demo a lot :)

ok despite hating all the bugs and everything, its still a really fun game to play.
I think its definately better than bf2 as i found you died simply TOO easily in that.

Its definately worth a purchase, id buy it from gameplay, they are good! i got my game 1day before release and before everyone eles!

Where as from my perspective it seems they mostly stayed on BF2 as I've not see too many fools on 2142 and so long as you get in a good squad there is some decent team play to be had.

I agree .. got BF2142 and love it. Different maps / two play mode - capture flag and titan just gives it a bit more variation. Will accept that it's got problems etc and should really be a mod to BF2.

The ranking system is flatter, teams are encouraged, following commands in encourages [all point driven] you follow - you get more points. Plus the in game update of getting point's you learn what your getting them for ! which is an excellent idea.

I've had no problems connecting to the EA master server in 2142 yet, and only experienced slight delays in getting my points updated, but only on last friday night. It's always slow on the weekends. So far I'm enjoying BF 2142, but I do agree that it has some bugs to work out and some balance issues to fix (and some pretty crappy maps). 3 rounds in the advanced Sniper Rifle with 10 spare clips is a little stupid, IMO. At least make the reload time faster. But I digress, get 2142, you probably won't regret it.

For online multiplayer I reckon FEAR Combat is the best thing going. Good old school high lethality carnage, and best thing is it's completely free. Still graphically the best FPS around too.

I thought the FEAR multiplayer was about as bland as the single player, if not more so.

If you don't care about graphics, you can't go wrong with Wolfenstien Enemy Territory, especially as it's completely free.

Playing FEAR Combat on a nice TDM server will give you a good old UT99 feeling.
