I am looking for a program that can rip my DVD's to my harddrive in a format that can be played in Windows Media Center/Player. Does anybody have any suggestions? Free is of course prefered, but a small price wont be a problem!

i use dvdshrink to rip and handbrake to encode to h.264, both excellent programs and incredibly easy to use. if you wish to play back movies compressed by either autogk or handbrake you will need to install the appropriate codecs though. k-lite codec pack is a good place to start if you don't feel like looking for each individual codec.

Yes, once you have ripped it from the DVD you just need to find something that will compress it into divx like Dr Divx

I use DVD Shrink to rip to HDD, then AutoGK to convert to XVid (DivX) AVI files.

unless something has changed since i last installed windows, you will still need to install additional codecs to play xvid/divx in media center. maybe you installed them without knowing it?

I had a program called “Xrip” or something like that, it worked perfectly, but it ripped the DVDs into the scene selection and menu files (uhhh… ISO? I belive) I lost it when my hard drive crashed last summer and havn't bothered to find it again... I think I will now though

I already have the divx and xvid codecs on my pc with the media center.
I just downloaded DVDShrink but it won't read my The Davinci Code DVD... Guess I have to try with another disk

AutoGK is utter cheesecake if you manage to rip the DVD. I'm surprised DVDShrink doesn't work, it's usually perfect.

Vote for DVD Decrypter and AutoGK (Vob to Xvid). At least that's what I found was the most elegant solution when I was lookin' to do some rippin' a while ago.
