with the already pressent flexible touch pad/screen, may shapes and curves of displays could be used anywhere you want to go, and be fully interactable. this could be the next big thing, looking forward to it!

Isn't this what the infamous "they" have been saying about computers in general for years? Newspapers need to make this affordable and accessible and tweak their business model before this will work. Even then it still won't happen any time soon.

What I want to know is how fast is the refresh, how good are the colours, and what will it cost? Durable, slow refresh, low/zero power e-paper would be fine for text pages and photo/art display (imagine a wall with that - no need to paint ever :D ). For anything else refresh is important.

I'd like to see someone make a keyboard from that "morphing metal" - you could roll it up like the silicone ones but it should be more stable & nicer to use when unrolled than those mushy silicone ones.

edit: P.S. my first thought when I saw the title was "rrr-roll up the rrr-rim" ( :hehe: but that's a Canadian thing)

Tim Horton's, wasn't it? Roll up the RIm to Win game a year or so back.

This will be nice if they actually mass produce it, but I guess time will tell, eh?

I've also heard talks of having a monitor printed onto clothing and stuff.

How is the brightness on a thing like this, and power consumption. It would be nice to see it replace lcd's in laptop if they are good enough quality and what not. Personally I do not think 'roll up' laptops is feasable for quite a while, just because the lcd is roll up. does not mean other things are.

If nothing else, it would be nice to have a far more durable lcd in a laptop, the military could see some use out of it in a new toughbook based laptop. With solid state memory (flash) and one of those, the things to break in a laptop are a little more limited

There are several working prototypes already in existence. One is a transparent OLED screen; clear in default state, but with bright green lit pixels when active. Another is a black-and-white roll-up LCD screen, that is incorporated in a prototype PDA by Phillips. The thing unfurls like a scroll. Kinda neat.

Cool, roll up your display and an optical keyboard (the ones which use projection)

Could be a new era for laptops.

Will be great for laptops in general, it should cut down on the number of cracked LCDs I have to deal with at work.

Not to mention that most newspapers use recycled paper. No doubt that this bendy monitor stuff will be made from Exotic/heavy/toxic chemicals which are by far much more worse for the environment.

If anything though, it will prolly be greener than current LCD models, and most definately CRT models, as it looks to use much less material... still, if the things gonna be full of mecury, ect...

You got it... It's actually become a yearly thing. Many see the Roll up the Rim contest as the first sign of spring here :D

Oh, and for those who do not know, Tim Hortons is very popular Coffee/Doughnut shop here in Canada. So popular in fact, that they ship Tim Horton's coffee to the Canadian troops over seas. :thumb:

Anybody else seen "Red Planet" with Val Kilmer and Carrie Ann Moss? They have a roll-out screen on their spacesuits.Link

I would like to see how this would stand up to a grilling on "Dragons den" no it's not a game it's a tv program in the UK where would be inventors put their invention before a panel of successful business people and it can be pretty tough on the inventors. It sounds a bit clive sinclair-ish. In any case if it turns out to be a real winner, no one here in the UK will invest any money in it, because they wont get a return on investment a week later. So it will go elsewhere. I don't agree it will help the environment at all.

    And again...
This is nothing new. Prototypes exist. Businesses are pouring money into development. It is happening.
