I'm looking at changing a scheduling system at work to better allow for part-time employees. I could do with an Excel-based tool or similar that lets me input each individuals normal working pattern (e.g. 5 days a week; 3 days a week and which days those are) and then produces a roster whereby everybody is working roughly the same number of days on the roster regardless as to whether they are part-time or not.

Anyone familiar with this sort of issue?

Preferably looking for a freeware solution, any expenditure would complicate things and potentially not be worth it.

I have been working on something similar at my work. Although I am slightly confused as to how you can have people working 3 or 5 days a week and doing the same time? Without exhaustive hours?

It's a roster for standby duties, so they're not actually working, just on standby in case of incidents. I should actually have put 5 and 7 days cos all staff do weekends too, regardless part or full time.
