Ok...so I might have goofed....not really... I'm quite happy with my HDD/NIC flasher circuit...its using 12V input voltage which is great...for the single LED's I'm using a 470 Ohm Resistor for a 2.4V LED...which means I'm runnign the 2.4V LED at approximately 2.6V if my math is correct and 20mA Well...I'm using red and yellow..and after gettign them both on and next to each other...I'm not very happy with the yellow ultrabright...it looks green...and doesn't differ enough... I was looking at some 2600 mcd Blue led's at radio shack, but they are 3.6V 20mA...If I plug in one of these LEDs to the 2.6V slot...I'm pretty sure I'll have weirdness right? Will they just be not as bright or will they not work...or woudl it behoove me to swap resistors?!? (Pain in the ass currently, cuz its all glue sealed and everything.) What are my options here? 3.6V led with 470 Ohm resistor from 12V....ramifications?
runing a LED with a higher resistor than it needs will only deminish it's brightness. The higher the resistor, the less the LED will shine. You should be fine, try it and see. In theroy, you will be delivering around 3.6 volts at 15 mA, which should be more than enough to light up a LED. Signing out...
Ahhh, so the LED will pull the required amoutn of voltage it needs period...but the resistor will limit the current as opposed to the voltage...hmmm...
Correct. LED voltage changes very slightly with big changes in current, but definitely not according to Ohm.
Thanx...I'll toss one in there and see what happens I used a Netgear FA311...here's a link to the actual modding of it: http://www.vhforums.net/upload/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1468 Enjoy
Ok...I threw the 3.7V blue LED onto my mod...and it actually looks REALLY good...I have it in the inactive position....and there's somethign about that blue that just pokes at the back of yoru brain...so while the red is brightly glowing...every now and then I'll get a sharp burst of blue from network or HDD activity and it ROX! It turns out the leds were 3.7V/20mA typical, and 4.5V/30mA max...so they could take a LOT more punishment than what I'm giving em... I'm hoping my red LED will stand up to it tho...I'm running the Red at 12V with a 470 Ohm .5 watt 5% tolerance resistor...here's the specs on the red LED: http://www.allelectronics.com/spec/LED-94.pdf am I ok with that?
