Hi guys! Right so I'm currently creating a media server. At its core is a Semprom 3000+ which runs at 1.6Ghz. It came with a heatsink and a fan attached to the heatsink. Previously the CPU sat at 43C Who thinks I can run it without the fan? The case has one 8cm output fan and a vent for air to flow in Who thinks it will melt if I run it without a fan?
Well - you can try. The worst thing that will happen is that the chip smashes headfirst into the thermal limit and shuts down.
It was a 4cm fan, that blew sideways through the heatsink towards the 8cm fan at the back of the computer.
If using the stock heatsink without a fan then of course it will overheat. No option on the poll for that
It may be ok if you "downclock" it, as it will then produce less heat. While its running you could unplug the fan and see what happens to the temps. I think you would need to buy a bigger heatsink.
I think it might be ok, it totally depends on how you load it. I did vote that it would overheat but as it is such a small fan at 40mm its not going to be moving that much air anyway. If it dosen't work too hard then i think you should be ok but it will run hot and then probably not last as long. Take the advice if it gets too hot underclock it and put a little lower heat overload shutdown thingy temp in the BIOS.
You might think so, but that isn't always the case. I disconnected the fan from my fenrir and prime 95'ed my chip (overclock in sig) and it didn't hit the thermal limit. Peaked out at 94.
Max temp of the cpu is 90c http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K7/AMD-Sempron 3000+ - SDA3000DUT4D (SDA3000BOX).html - was the 43c you mention in the first post under load?
Hehe, I am falling back on the numerous older PC's I've been out to repair with stuck fans tbh. Didn't realise it was just a 4cm fan but still reckon it will be borderline, particularly if the 43c op mentions is at idle
I ran my i7 920 overclocked to around 3.8GHz without a fan for 2 months before I put 2 x GT 1850's on it. In general use there was never a problem. Granted, this is all housed in a FT02 case with the new penetrator fans, which are amazing.
Depends on the air flow of the case. You could always try using a fan controller to slow the fan down enough that you can't hear it. But how much cooling it would provide????? You should experiment and see.
try it and see, if you get a good heatpipe heatsink thats meant to be used passive you would have a better result.
No, at idle! I have a feeling it might top out and die since the airflow is pretty bad! I've bought a new 4cm fan (the bearings in the old one were gone!) from ebay for £4 but I'm going to run it without to start with, just to see the results!
Good luck! I reckon you will certainly need the fan with 43c idle temps but look forward to your results Dont forget to post em up
You could stick one of those little voltage tweakers that fit in a back plate. They are cheap and you could turn the fan right down until its no longer audible (but hopefully still doing something!)
if it were me, id go one of two routes: A. remove the CPU fan and create a ducting for the 80mm exhaust fan to pull air directly past the heatsink and out of the case (some people consider this to be "passive" cooling, though i dont). B. replace the annoying, buzzy little 40mm fan with something much larger and quieter (youll probably need to create a ducting in this case too). a 120mm fan, run at inaudible speeds, will probably move more air than the 40mm fan at full speed.
