I’ve been recently digging through my games collection, in an attempt to reclaim my childhood by playing some old DOS games… I’ve managed to get all the LucasArts adventure games running (thanks to scummVM), but I’m having problems with the other games (X-Com, Another World, Abuse etc). I’ve downloaded DOSbox, and while it’s a great little app, it’s not too hot when it comes to the more graphically intensive games (according to the readme, it’ll only ‘emulate’ a mid range 486 PC) – I do seem to get a lot of slowdown on most games (I’ve noticed it doesn’t particularly like parallax scrolling effects). So, is there an alternative to DOSbox? Maybe some kind of virtual machine app?
I'm playing through a few old games at the moment too. Namely Blade Runner and Resident Evil 2. Both fine with XP. I'm assuming you've tried the XP compatibility mode? Any luck with finding any patches? Maybe you could install Win95/98 on a seperate drive just for older games?
Well, I have tried a few games using XP compatibility mode, but the problem is because they all run in such a low resolution (and I’m using a TFT), the screen seems to flicker a hell of a lot. At least in DOSbox I can run them in windowed mode, or fiddle with the display settings. I’ve also tried playing Leisure Suit Larry 7, which won’t run in XP at all (complains about a missing ‘999.pal’ file). I presume this is something to do with old VESA drivers, as it runs ok in DOSbox (albeit, very slowly).
