True. But I've a long standing '**** Switzerland' stance anyway, so for me at least, no change of opinion needed there.

Same goes for London, as it happens.

True enough. Sorry I took it as read that we've been corrupt and morally bankrupt for a long time.

Too many vested interests and money tied to our political system.

"There's no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt"

Every nation is complicit in things it shouldn't be, but so long as the rich stay rich it'll never change.

Since we're in the tail end of '**** around and find out' and doing a lot of finding out, I reckon it's time to burn some Russian Regime shaped bridges. **** 'em. They've given as solid a reason as any regime can give to cut them out of everything they can be cut out of. As far as I can tell, the "risk" of it making them cosy up to other regimes would just mean them openly doing it. They want to behave like dickhead dictators, then **** it. There's no 'fixing' Putin's regime with olive branches, the twisted **** has a veritable orchard of olive branches I'm sure. Time to try the stick.

The EU are only now freezing Putin's assets and by all accounts there are plenty of shell companies linked to him in the UK we're doing feck all about.

He must be laughing, we're swatting a crazed bear with a newspaper.

Probably, in his Tiny Dick Bunker, tucked away from anyone his paranoia considers a threat, yeah.

S'why I'm quite sure he's going to come away from this emboldened and largely unconcerned about consequences. If there's no actual retaliation, ideally without splitting atoms, then I'd also expect China to get considerably more aggressive in their claims about Taiwan as well.

Quite so. I'm sure China are looking at this as a test case.

Don't forget their attempts to annex the south China sea.

If NATO appears weak on Russia, they'll be in like Flynn

I figured China tested the waters with Hong Kong, and are now seeing outright war as a much less concerning prospect thanks to chump-pal Putin cannonballing right in and, thus far, getting away with it.

But maybe all the twitter condemnations from world leaders will change their mind.. Probably not.

Isn't the Swiss approach to accept everyone's deposits then quietly disappear those of the losing side? "What stolen Jewish gold? Nothing like that here, friend, just good ol' Swiss gold that appeared in the vaults by magic one day."

Pretty much the source of the long standing '**** Switzerland' opinion of mine.

Italy France and Germany refuse to give up their dependence on Russian energy.

Nice toothless approach from the EU and NATO as usual.

"We will target anybody who we believe has links to the Putin regime," she says.

So... the Conservative Party, then? You... you're going to target the Conservative Party, right?

Germans may well revolt if the government allowed the energy prices to rise - Even if the reason was as unequivocally right as attempting to back down an invading regime.

Toothless because they want to keep their power, even if it is barely power.

My wife is Ukrainian, and we visit pretty much every year, it's like a second home. Can't believe what I'm seeing and yet I'm not that surprised at the same time. Nobody in Ukraine actually thought Putin was going to do it, but they are a proud country and are fighting hard alone to defend themselves (and doing a good job by all accounts). Of course they can't win against a country the size of Russia, but that they fight anyway is so admirable.

The sanctions don't bother Putin and his cronies in the slightest, they knew they would be coming so shored themselves up with plenty of hard currency for the last year or so. It will mostly hit ordinary folks, but at the same time, perhaps that will create some unrest in Russia (though his total control of the Russian media tends to mean most people follow his narrative anyway).

So many innocent people dieing for some old time KGB dude to secure his place in the history books (whatever that place may be). He's already got more money than he and his next three-four generations could possibly know what to do with, so what else is left to do than play war!

From what I've been reading it sounds like his plan is to take a major airport near Kyiv (seems complete now); then inject 10k troops; take the parliament; install a dummy head of state (per Belarus); then probaby split Ukraine in half down the Dnieper, one half being pro-western Ukraine (he can't fight and control them all!), the other Russia's "Ukraine" - just like old times - perhaps they can build a wall for maximum authenticity!

    Слава Україні!

Putin has now been addressing the Ukrainian military saying they should rise up against the neo-nazis in Kyiv.

I'm sorry, what drugs is he on?

He's on the heady drug of knowing that he's in pretty much complete control of his nation's media, and as a result a very high percentage of the population will believe every word he says.
