As @David has correctly stated, you need to do your homework when it comes to memory and the variety you purchase - mine are Samsung B Die 3000MHz CL14 (I didn't pay the 200MHz premium as some would say), mine happily run at 3200MHz CL14 however. Below is a screen shot of my day to day overclock, another reason for going for a Zotac 1070 is Zotac also use Samsung memory - Overclocking is as rewarding as it is frustrating at times, ultimately it takes a lot of time and effort to get it right.
got the RAM running at 2933, wouldn't boot at 3200/1.35v, i'll try it later, although with the ram i bought not being on the QVL i'm not holding my breath, i haven't tried overclocking atm either.
MSI got another AGESA update today, if that's how you spell it. Any way, the overclock should be easy. Punch in 39 and set volts lol.
I wish it were that easy! My chip won't do 3.9 at less than 1.425v at best... it's not the best chip in the world.
I joined the bandwagon as well! Used the change to drop down a form factor too, to a nice cosy mATX case, with the 1600. (embedding seems to struggle so here: http://imgur.com/a/n2EEt) Cable routing a bit wonky, but such is the price for a small case. Coming from an i5 760, so should be quite the step up
I watched a video from 8Pack yesterday on OCing the 1700 etc. He said they should all pretty much do 3.9 with 1.45v. So at least your volts are a bit lower. I mean what else would you get? 100mhz? hardly worth worrying over is it brah Nice rig man. I would make a cover for the top area where the cables are. Nice flat black.
Exactly! I'd rather preserve the chip (even if the CHVI reckons 1.4v is stock voltage!) and run it cooler. Now that I am on the 1403 BIOS, it has implemented the 20c offset (which it shouldn't for the non-X chips!) and it means it reckons my CPU only hits 50 or so under load. I know it is closer to 70, but I'm still not fussed either way. Blissful silence is key. This is just a quick run, no tweaks... you can see all of the open programs in the task bar.
haha nice ! yeah I was very very tempted by the 1700. Unfortunately I separated from my wife about 3.5 weeks back and because I didn't know who was going to keep the flat I refunded Mr Bungle instead of taking the risk of messing him around. Good thing I did, because the next morning the forum went down for ages. Any way, had another chance to think (lmao) and my 8 core Ivy Xeon is hitting around 1180 points in CB ATM. I think with faster ram (1600-2133) it *should* reach 1200 points. My 5820k @ 4.6ghz hits around 1250. The main sticking point for me is ram. I have four 2133 (I think, if that was the entry speed for DDR4, could be 2400?) sticks of ram and they have very expensive coolers on (I think they are XSPC? they cost me £25 a set so £50 :O ) Any way yeah, I could swallow the price of the 1700 and B350 Strix, but I was not prepared to buy more ram at the prices going on now. I mean yeah they have dropped to £120 or so but that is still crazy if you already have a full set of 2133 ! And the thing is with that ram I would barely scrape around 1350, maybe 1400 points in CB. So it's not worth it really. Instead I'm going to whack faster ram in the Xeon rig and put a TXP in the 5820k rig and call it a day there.
Sorry to hear that news, Vault. That sucks!! I would've been happy with my 5820K in all honesty. The only reason I did swap is because it cost me about $100 to do so, including buying new RAM at $200 for 16GB (yeah, it's costly!) which made sense for me to do it. I am going to try to get into video production, so the extra two cores will really help me out and there's also the other fact that I just reaallllyyyyy wanted to give AMD a chance.
Dude I almost bought a Vega FE on tick yesterday. I want to support AMD too Thing is, both of my rigs are as good as a 1600. And I really didn't even want to upgrade to a 5960x which is about where I would be if I got a decent clocker (5960x like). Then I opened an extra bank acc for bills etc and the bank ran a credit check and said I didn't exist. lmao. That's what you get for no contracts, PAYG phones and so on. I hate owing money to any one ! Any way, Titan XP came up decent price (about the same as a stock 1080Ti) so I've gone for that. I dunno man. It would be a royal faff to upgrade to Ryzen in any of my three rigs any way. Two are properly WC so that only leaves one with an AIO (I got a AM4 adapter in case I change my mind). But seriously, 5820k that does 4.6ghz with 16gb ram is not worth upgrading to a 3.9-4ghz R7 1700. Shame.
That really isn't worth upgrading, you're right. When they release a new revision that clock better... then perhaps it will be. I am waiting for that.
Updated my CH6 to the 1403 AGESA code 1.0.0.6 BIOS - end result... BCLK of 101.4 which gives my 1600 an overclock of 3.953.5GHz @ 1.373V with the memory at 3244MHz CL14 - Cinebench R15 score of 1370
Cheers V-T, direct airflow to the GPU and a front and backed radiator throwing heat straight out of the case = a win win for the 101
