Its used to try and detect wether your hard drive is going to fail.
S.M.A.R.T = Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology ( I had to look that up) you can read more @ http://www.belarc.com/Drive/smart.html

Yeah its pretty much standard on HD's anymore.. you can get proggies to read the SMART data from the drive.. CPU cool does the trick, but the numbers are about pointless..

You only really need to enable it if you are particularly worried about your hard drives failing as it should give an early warning! However, there is suppossedly a performance hit as it takes a while longer than normal to read data while it checks the drive meaning a slightly slower system! It's remains your choice though.;)

i've kept it enabled ever since many years back that my 2.1 gig hdd crashed big style (2.1 gig was considered entry level back in the day) whilst waiting for a replacement from Quantum (It was Quantum Big Foot if memory serves me correctly) I bought a Western digital 6 gig drive, whic was consdiered obscene!!

unless you are running an un cooled IBM 75GPX series hdd, i guess having it not enabled with most modern hdds should be fine....

my ibm drive is cooled with a hard drive cooler and an 80mm fan. I overheated it at a lan when it wasn't cooled and now it won't work without a fan :D

am i the only person who does not have a cooler on his hard drive? im running a fujitsu 20gig (think its only 5400 rpm, cant remember bought it when 20gb was max you could get) but hey it runs cool, never had any problem with it & why would you toch IBM with a stick? im stiking to fujitsu drives & i havent noticed that much of a performace hit with SMART enabled & never noticed on when i switched it on on my friends maxtor high speed drive (agian cat remember what it was) but i think the speed incrase if it is there is minimal at best (doe sit really matter if you drive loads that mp3 0.00000005 seconds faster than before, as long as it does it & is reliable?)

oh my god i cant belive me the speed freak has just said that

well my Maxtor D740X 40GB never gets warm to the touch even if it's a 7200rpm drive, it is always cold, anyways i have it in a hard drive rack thingy which comes with the Lian-Li cases and it has 2 80mm fans blowing past it all the time :)

With that kind of airflow over it, it shouldn't get warm at all. My Barracuda II doesn't get at all warm with one 80mm blowing over it (chieftec dragon), and that had a real hot and loud reputation (as well as being the fastest at the time).
