Kinda proves my real theory on Apple software- the stuff they make is great for their own machines because that's all they're making it for...they can focus on pretty transitions and cool 'new' features and not waste time making it compatible with every piece of hardware on the planet. When the latter is a requirement though, this happens...

    Yeah exactly.

iTunes on windows isn't that bad, but Safari is just awful. Browsing wise its ok, but the font smoothing, general window appearance and performance drop when you resize the window is diabolical.

Having said that though, it is, after all, a beta.

Its good to be able to test websites in all browsers from one machine though. I've currently got IE6 (Virtual Machine - Free from MS!) , IE7, Firefox, Opera and now Safari. I was really hoping Safari would replace IE7 as my primary browser, but.. no.

Yeah it really does drag along when you try to resize the window (ironically the thing I hate about Safari on the gf's mac is the inability to fill the damn screen). I'm a bit annoyed that they still haven't got custom search providers either- most other browsers let you add them from just visiting the site, it feels like Apple are bumming Yahoo and Google too much atm to allow anyone else in.

Theres an addon which lets you do that, forgot the name though. Could do with it myself actually.

Are you the only one to have caught that? I use firefox on both platforms, but like you, I know that this release of safari is BETA and will not rule it out as a viable alternative until after I get a chance to see the final release.

Some of the features sound very cool; like being able to drag a tab out so that it makes its own window...

I've only had about 10 minutes to play with it, but so far I like it better than IE.

I think most people know its beta software, but its very unlike apple to release a beta with so many "flaws".

I just hope they manage to make it perform and act like a real windows application.

Maybe one day we'll see iChat on windows. That'd be a godsend.

    Cheers to that -

(Or even better - to no longer need windows for work or gaming.....)
(speaking of.... Has anyone tried out the 3d acceleration you can do with Parallels 3 yet?)

I've just installed safari 3.0 on my powerbook.. Seems no different.

(Anyone that says "Safari seems snappier" needs to be shot!)

    Safari seems snappier...</outright lie>

But the chances of them changing the layout for the better so that it actually meshes with Windows are about the same as me getting killed by an ice cream truck.

Its a beta its going to have bugs the mere fact there is a report this bug button on the task bar shows what level it is.

Personally I think its running well on windows and os x. There are a few minor issues but for a first windows version its not bad.

The dragging tabs to the task bar for a new windows is quite good.

My only issue is some of the text rendering somehow looks odd. I can't put my finger on just why.

Woa the find is very niffty, as is the RSS viewer. Never really used Safari before (even on a mac). Can't see it replacing Firefox as my browser of choice, but it's certaintly got a few cool features.

Seems to run pretty slow here though (Vista on a Dell).

Edit:/ It also looks very ugly.

    I couldn't help but laugh seeing this : http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=40266

I can change the preferences just fine with vista, and the fact that it has no save or apply button is because they shouldn't be needed for any application. Apple have done it for years on their mac apps :)
