I went on Safari in Tanzania recently and took plenty of pics. Here's a few of my favourite ones. The rest of them are here.
I've not had any time to do any post processing and I wouldn't really know where to begin on that, so any ideas would be great! Comments and criticism of the pics is very welcome, but I won't be going again any time soon!!

#2 should have been cropped so the eye was on the intersection of 1/3rd lines.

Level the horizon on #3 and #4.

    #4 is my fav.

Not sure what you mean about the 1/3rd lines?

Good point on the horizons, didn't even notice them. I'll change them later. And yeah 4 is definately my favourite photo I took (out of 2000!)

Those imaginary lines are the thirds.

I still don't understand why those points aren't focus points on most cameras.

#2 A little tighter crop and some unsharp mask

#3 Sky looks properly exposed but the giraffe looks underexposed.

I like #4 the best but it could use a tighter crop.

    I wanna go on safari...

The Cheetah is great...after some monitor calibration(?) along with some level tweaks and crops and you've got yourself some very nice images--still gotta get me a trip to Africa for Safari.

Getting here is expensive, but once you're here-it's extremely cheap.

Its not so much the expense, rather the time...neither of which I have much of or at least much to spare.

Agree with Jamie and +1 for a tighter crop on #4.

Was bored and decided to have a go on the Cheetah, obviously working with tiny pic so quality isn't top notch.
If you want me to take it down, just ask :)

Heh, good point :) I just checked where the "corner" AF points on my 40d are, and they're certainly not ON the rule-of-thirds points - not too far off though.

Loving Shadowed's version of the cheetah - the PP adds a ton of depth to it. Looks a little odd probably from jpeg compression or whatever, but the additional color makes a lot of difference IMO.

I don't use any other AF-points on my camera than the center one. Generally the auto-AF-point-selection doesn't go right, I like to be in control, and it takes too long to manually switch AF-points. So what I do is point the center of the camera to the subject I want in focus, half-press to focus, and then composite the picture by moving the camera while holding the button.

Since this means I need to move the camera back to the subject when I want to take another picture of the same, you can often find me rolling my head back-and-forth from the center of the subject to the center of the composition I want.

This is what I tend to do. I also went to get some pro photographs taken with my family any the lady behind the camera was doing the same thing on her Canon 1D so I guess it's normal.

Only person I've really heard that doesn't do that is Scott Bourne (came up on a recent TWIP episode), but I suppose if you're really good with the AF dial that's an easier way to get a flying bird in focus than trying to recompose. At 600mm+ of course.

For BIF (birds in flight) I generally use the center AF point since it is the most accurate and reliable...for everything else I select the point manually--hardly ever focus and recompose unless I'm shooting past f/8 and or static subjects such as landscapes for example.

Exactly why is the center one better? I have heard this several times, but have never understood why.

Has it anything to do with horizontal/vertical/cross type AF meters? Does cameras have more than one type (as in cross in center, and H/V around "the edge")?

Oh. Sorry for the small hijack here...
