My new computer obviously supports removing drives without turning the computer off, but this is of no practical use to me. I'd like to get rid of the icon in the taskbar, that I can click on to do it. Is there a way to stop my hard drives being recognised as removable?

I thought it was for removing USB stuff the proper way, the 'Safely Remove Hardware' is present on any XP install. I originally set it 'always hide' but I must have found some way of getting rid altogether, maybe disabled in Services?

SATA drives are hot swapable, therefor they also show up in the "remove devices" thingymagjinghy... You could try moving them around on different SATA ports...

I did notice (back in my windows days) that if you persist in booting with the drive attached (normal use ;)) it will magically disappear...

[And now for some linux zealottry]Or you could go linux, detach (umount) it when you want, no whining about it ;)[/the zealot has left the thread]

Well, I guess I'll just keep on with that icon there then.

Linux was... far too difficult for me at first... I'll try again soon.
