From Ananova: Sainsbury's 'pack-your-bag' advert banned A Sainsbury's advert featuring Jamie Oliver has been banned for misleading customers into thinking they no longer had to pack their own shopping. The ad featured two girls watching the celebrity chef having his carrier bags packed for him in a Sainsbury's store. One of the girls assumed he was getting special treatment but a checkout assistant told her: "We scan and pack now." But customers who visited their local stores found that checkout staff would pack only a handful of items for them. In some cases, the checkout assistants would pack no more than three things. http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_793279.html?menu=news.latestheadlines I always wondered if they really meant the kid on minimum wage would happily load up all your heavy items for you. Now it shows it *was* just a PR exercise.
My mate is a checkout manager for Sainsburys and they are actually supposed to pack your bags for you. I had a massive (£90) shop for me packed the other day...
I don't think I'd trust some of the 'Scary People' (tm) behind the tills at our local Sainsburys to pack for me...
I dont. When they introduced this i was well pished off cause i prefer todo it myself as i take a big proper hiking rucksack with me cause its easier to carry home (st00dent me is). Anyway, EVERY TIME i went shopping they would INSIST on trying to pack a crappy, wasteful plastic bag for me even though they could see me preparing to pack the stuff in my h00ge rucksack?! I have to tell them every time (this varys between a nice "ill do it thank you" and "will u leave my shopping alone!") ill do it myself which is damn annoying.
I was at sainsuburys the other day and put the advert to the test.......the girl put three things in a bag and then just stopped i demand good service
Wait a minute! Is this a grocery store? If so, they don't pack your groceries for you!? What kind of rubbish is that? Granted there are some people incapable of putting crushables on top, but they don't usually last long (at the decent stores). But the only grocery stores here where the customers bag their own groceries are the ones that allow you to check yourself out. Crazy Brits.
Yep we dont get it done for us. Its good todo it for people like old women, but in the long run its quicker if u pack yourself and they just scan the things thru. Also, most people on the tills just chuck the stuff into the bags without a 2nd thought, so i prefer todo it myself.
Seems very odd to me. I can't think of a single grocery stores around here that doesn't pack your groceries for you. In fact, my very 1st job was a grocery packer. I agree with Ubermich... crazy brits
If u have people packing separate to those on tills it costs twice as much for the company though. Dont u get pissed off with people packing your stuff and it just getting chucked in any old how? Or do they get training on proper packing techniques Personally i think all u merkins are just lazy watching the poor sod on minimum wage having to pack as well as chuck everything thru whilst u stand there watching hehe:
The same person checks and packs here (most of the time, sometimes they'll have one kid walking between registers packing as many bags as possible). Most of them get the basic idea on how to pack, the ones that don't either get the boot or are promoted to management positions
I always pack my own bags. People in the shops are useless, just throw boxes in a bag anyold how. Bag packing is a careful art, and takes years to master.
Both the Wal-mart and Target in Frisco are rediculously good at packing. I can't even imagine people not packing your bags for you (and I grew up in England...) They scan, pack and help you with your bags all without additional cost. Infact, there's a sign to tell you not to tip the people helping you with your bags as it is complementary.
I think introducing packing in England is an uphill struggle.. from my perspective, for two reasons: 1) I want to pack my own bags. I know how far I have to carry them, or how they're going to sit in the back of the car, so I pack things depending on what I think is best. 2) I don't want to be stood there like a Charlie whilst one person scans them and another packs (or even one does both). I get bored enough waiting the queue as it is, not least having to sit around twiddling my thumbs or making polite conversation whilst they pack for me too. I just couldn't stand it happening by default. For people with kids, or older people then I'm sure it's a big help and the staff should definately ask if they want assistance, but I'm more than capable of packing a few bags so if I want any help I'll ask for it.
