    Hi guys,

I've just finished building my new machine and the first thing I did obviously was to install my wireless dongle and get connected to my wireless network. This has been a really easy task in the past.

So I installed the dongle and the Netgear drivers, set up the network connection, it could see the network fine and everything, but it doesn't seem to be being assigned an IP or anything.

I've tried reinstalling the adapter, manually specifying IPs etc, but to no avail.

    Any suggestions?

    Sam

Edit: Running a clean install of Windows XP Pro

how can it see the network if its not been assigned an ip? :eyebrow:

    a) whats your complete network setup?
    b) do start -> run -> 'cmd' -> "ipconfig /all" and paste the results here :)

I think it can see the network because the network ID is being broadcast. But why it thinks it's connected to the network I can't quite work out...

    a) As in, what hardware I'm using? The adapter is a Netgear WG111v2, connecting to a Netgear DG834G wireless modem/router, which has been up for months, never without any problems (in case you didn't realise, I'm on my laptop now happily connected to the network and the internet, typing this post).

    b) Results are as follows:

    Code:
    Windows IP Configuration

            Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : lianli
            Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
            Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
            IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
            WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection 3:

            Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
            Description . . . . . . . . . . . : NETGEAR WG111v2 54Mbps Wireless USB
    2.0 Adapter
            Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0F-B5-B8-C9-86
            Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
            Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
            Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.115.106
            Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
            Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Do you have encryption setup right? Try disabling it and see it that works. Then we can work from there to narrow down the problem.

right yea, thats xp's wonderful autoconfig ip address, when its set to use dhcp and cant find a dhcp server it just makes up a random ip in the form 169.254.x.y

seems like its getting a wireless connection but cant see the router (i assume you have dhcp enabled on the router) to acquire an ip address
are you certain the wireless security settings are correct? wep and what not

what happens if you force a fixed ip? can you then ping the router or laptop?
is the laptop using wireless to access the network too? can you post the ipconfig /all from the laptop too

Right, I disabled WEP and now I can connect fine and browse the internet.

Obviously I'd like to enable it again ASAP, so could anyone hazard a guess as to why I couldn't connect before?

Enable it and make sure you are typing the key in right. It's case sensitive and make sure you have it using the right key, such as 1,2,3,4. Cause I use 3 and I often forget and I have the same problems.
